Memorial slab quality
« on: August 26, 2012, 02:31:25 pm »

Is the quality of the memorial slab determined by the quality of the slab that gets engraved, or is it based on the skill of the engraver?

Hmmm, the wiki doesn't say, so now I'm curious.

The slab itself has quality levels, but I don't know about the engraving itself. Make a blank slab, note it's value, then engrave something on it to test it. If the engraving is anything above base quality, there should be an increase in value.

Unless slab decorations don't have quality levels at all. Use a high level engraver and keep churning out slabs if you don't get it at first, and keep going til you are reasonably sure that they do not have quality.

The engraving doesn't appear to have quality levels.  Only the base slab that the mason creates.

Sooo.... A dabbling engraver can engrave a better slab than a legendary engraver if the former engraves a masterwork slab and the latter a normal slab?

Skill level increases the chance of producing higher quality results. Lower level skill can still produce some higher quality results, but the chances are much lower. I don't think a dabbling engraver even has a chance to produce a masterwork, though.

Ok just had a legendary engraver engrave an exceptional slab and the result was an exceptional memorial. Had a proficient engraver engrave an exceptional slab and the result was an exceptional memorial. For the most part it seems like the base quality of the slab is what matters the most, but the detail of the engravings on the other hand might be affected by the skill.

I'm pretty sure memorial slabs only have a quality level for the slab itself, not the engraving, so the only effect Engraver skill would have, aside from job speed, is how many details you get in the engraving (assuming that those are even random to begin with).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I can now confirm this.
