from what materials could you craft tattoos?

a dwarf laced with steel in the form of tattoos?
a moody dwarf produces a nether-cap tattoo of the highest quality?

weaponized tattoos menacing with spikes?
With hanging rings of microcline and yak bone.

Would that not simply be the dwarven equivalent of piercings?

No, wait, dwarven piercings are arrows lodged in their bodies.

I like the idea of being able to wrestle someones tattoos of then slowly beating them to death with them.

My major suggestion would be to put them in the form of Runic magic, to explain why they /could/ be removed. That doesn't make the rest more logical... But for those that require logic, I have just one thing to say. Please forgive me, but I couldn't resist.

It's insane, even for DWARVES.
Insane? No....

Any way you could perhaps make the Doctor into a "tattoo artist" and thread into tattoos?

There should be certain things that are unequippable in DF. Ripping out tattoos from the skin and bashing bronze collossi with them just sounds downright idiotic.
Idiotic? Don't you mean DWARVEN?

Hey, it's been done before.

So the first tattoo must be one permitting you to crush everyone's lungs with one glance.

Hmmm. I foresee dwarves not wearing pants because they allready wear a tatoo.

Also 'pig-tail tatoo'. Dont think its possible to hide material names, so you would have to restrict it to a certain material through custom reactions, downside of this is that worldgen characters wouldnt be using them.

I think the color discriptor is the far more practical way, though the equipable would result in much more amusement.

Not a stupid idea at all, the opposite of that. Right now its implementation is wonky at best, but that ain't gonna stop us.

Good idea, it could work like suturing, if only there was a way to keep the tattoo/thread there, without preventing true suturing in case of wounds. But then, again, how could it give armor ratings :-\

It could always have an armor rating of zero, but then it will eventually rot away, unless that's ok.

Could tatoos be done as a tissue shape?  If they could you could specify all the members of a certain entity have the same tatoo, like arrows on the airbenders.

Maybe that the dwarves never died and everyone is just shunning them.

Yeah, the color_descriptor is what I will go with in the end. All races will have random tattoos, so you might stumble upon an elf with trees tattoed or "I love nature" ;) Or a dwarf with a hammer, or similar things. Will be rare, random, more an easter egg then any real game mechanic. I couldnt find a way to apply them through workshops though, no chance. Only with transformations, and those cause enough trouble as it is.

What about a syndrome that changes their skin to tattoed skin? it could be at a workshop and require dimple dye to make the reaction.
