Yeah, it's a really big part of America.  The people have the right to stand up to the government.  I wish it didn't have to be with guns, but if the government has them, then the common people should have them.  It's a way of keeping the government in check.

Yeah, it's a really big part of America.  The people have the right to stand up to the government.  I wish it didn't have to be with guns, but if the government has them, then the common people should have them.  It's a way of keeping the government in check.

It's not just with guns.  Guns are just the absolute last resort. 

The whole reason for the protections of the First Amendment (free speech, right to assembly) are to give Americans the right to stand up to the government.  I love protesters, I honestly do.

There is also the Fifth Amendment (Due Process), and the Tenth Amendment (All right not expressly given to the Federal Government are reserved to the States AND the people).  There is also a whole bunch of stuff that lets you sue the Government (Due Process is only the tip of the iceburg on this one).

So yes, if the US Government deprives its people of all these and other methods of resistance, then Americans still have their guns.  Which is why the Liberal Crime Squad makes more sense in the Conservative Nightmare than in the normal start.

Actually, restricting speech is one of the most common forms of Government Oppression.  Even so-called "civilized" nations restrict some speech in public, Canada and parts of Europe spring to mind.  Granted, most of the restricted speech isn't exactly what I'd prefer to say in public, but once a government makes its citizens watch what they say, the fear has begun.

The Freedom of Speech that America enjoys is one of the greatest assets of the USA, unmatched by many countries with similar economics and prosperity.  I know it's corny, but it is one of the few things that actually makes me proud to be an American.

I know what you mean, when I was younger I was infatuated with my love of this Country, but then I started to watch the news, and then read the news, and then I started slowly slip into what is now my dislike of this Country, the people who run it, and the idiots who want undo all the good things that I have left to like about this place. But I like to think that the Goverment has been oppressing us for a longer time, after they started hardening the gun laws, it wasn't reall oppression, but it was a slippery slope, and only the begining.

Well, the problem is that due to history, the US constitution focus way too much on government oppression, ignoring other forms of oppressions. The very reasons we have a government in the first place is to protect us from thos other form of oppression. When racist and homophobic speech is banned like in Europe, you may have some people actually fear the government, but you also have many less people afraid of the guy preaching you're an abomination of nature and should be sent in camp.

Yeah. Land of the free my ass. If the goverment wants to help America like they say they do, they should have the presidential vote, and then make the person who lost the president, becuase the people who win the elections do seem to be any good for this country.

Nobody on US soil has ever gotten a drone strike.  And the only US citizen to suffer a drone strike was basically the Goebbels of Al-Qaeda.  Granted, I don't approve of the absense of due process, but the information released to the media shows the guy was far from innocent (unless I missed something over the past three months, which is more than likely as I've been busy with other things, and I appologize).

Ironically, the techicality most often in play in the US is that the Constitution only protects you from the Government, as you said.  But I'd argue that the Corporations are perhaps the biggest culprits for oppression in the US.  While the Government can't punish you for your actions, your employer certainly can.  Many employees are "at will", and can be fired on a whim.  I think the boss on The Drew Carey Show sums up just how that can work. 

Most employees can certainly be fired for anything they say or do, as the limitation on arbitrary termination is defined by the characteristics of the person and not their actions, and the list of "protected classes" is really quite small.

Seconding this as fact. The CIA is legally prohibited from operating within the United States. Advocating for al-Qaeda is protected speech. Actually planning terrorist acts is not.

While the US is very culturally conservative by European standards, pornography remains legal and very profitable in the US. In general, the only things universally banned are those involving some kind of harm to someone or something else -- child pornography, animal abuse, and others in that vein.

While I think child molestation and beastality should be illeagal, I beleive all other kinds of sex and pornography should be legal. I won't name them, but the other forms of illeagal sex should be legal, as long as both members agree to intercourse.
