This is my second fortress and...
« on: August 26, 2012, 03:00:28 am »

I just dug into the HFS without even getting a chance to pick up the cotton candy.  Fortunately, none of the clowns seem to be able to fly, and the only way up is through a 1-tile hole I dug.  Is it possible to wall them off and actually get a chance to mine the cotton candy above?

All clowns can fly, but if you have more than one tube of spoilermetal, they sometimes dont head for the one you breach. Walling the off is fine - nothing can destroy walls yet. Even better might be to build a fortification so you can then shoot at any that come into range. Once walled in, anything above is safe unless the hollow section extends upwards. You might consider flooring off the whole tube at the breach level if you have the time in order to claim all the adamantine above.

Of course, the FPS hit of lots of clowns pathing about is good incentive to get rid of them by some means. You can work that out by yourself. There are a number of viable means ranging from risky to simple via suicidal, hilarious and boring. YMMV.

Ok, now I'm extremely confused.  My FPS has taken a hit, like you said, but all of the clowns disappeared from the units menu, and everything seems to be mostly alright for now.  Personally, I'd prefer to equip all of my military dwarves with said metal and then take the clowns head on, but that's only because that's the best idea I've come to for now.

I would think they are in locations you cannot see right now - unit visibility is linked directly to tile visibility.

So yeah, I have a whole hoard of demons lined up single file behind this fortification.  Two melee dwarves wandered down there of their own accord and promptly got fried.  One of these guys doesn't have enough left to bury, but the other hasn't actually taken any damage despite being !!on fire!!, so I'm more worried about him starting a flaming tantrum spiral.  I checked his status and he's completely white on everything, which seems odd.

EDIT: Wait, no, this can't possibly be right.  Instead of this flaming dwarf being a soldier, it appears that this is a baby that was being carried by one of the soldiers instead.  So now I have a flaming baby crawling around, not taking any damage.  Is this common?

Hehe, sure.  Kit up your dwarves in spoiler and have a head-on attack.

Disclaimer: chances of success exceptionally remote unless you have the right army.

Why?  Well, i'll spoiler it, dont read unless you really wanna know the problem with clowns
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also.  I would generally prefer walls to fortifications, for the reasons you have already discovered, a lot of them have ranged specials and will also be firing through the fortifications.

The material they are made from is actually a big deal. Salt, steam, snow etc. = easy. Fire, steel etc. = less easy, for a variety of reasons. Vomit is also a viable (if easy to kill) clown material, IIRC.

Breaching the circus once gave me slade clowns. Slade clowns are not easy to kill.

if it's a blob made of steel, don't fight it. it may not heal, but it probably doesn't need to.

All except one of them are steam or slime.  The one that fried my two stupid militia dwarves was fire.  Long as the flaming baby doesn't catch anything else on fire, we should be good.  Also, does the seperating and melting coins for infinite metal trick work on the most recent build? (the one I have)

Said baby has bad thoughts about enduring the decay of a mother and inhaling smoke.  Being on fire is strangely absent.

Yes, the metal trick still works. Yes, it works on candy.

If you have a captured necromancer or a reanimating biome, and you build up an army of about 500 zombies, that should serve to kill the circus. (Just dump the undead into hell when you're finished.) I can tell you right now that if you're planning on a direct full-adamantine assault, that won't work even with your relatively tame demons without a huge zerg rush/gratuitous sacrifice of legendary soldiers.

If you embarked on an evil biome, exposing the clowns to the clouds of death will kill them off in short order.

Sadly, no. The clouds cause death via syndromes, which even the organic clowns are immune to.

Given that this is only my second fort, I didn't embark in an evil biome.  If only I'd embarked in a good biome, maybe I could capture and train unicorns to fight them for me...
