Only if they themselves actually knew what it was.
And if I'm guessing what it is, it's a quiz on pop culture from X years ago right? It's not that uncommon, but it also requires a knowledge of things that aren't guaranteed by age. Not that any knowledge is guaranteed just by being old.

Just do individual screenings like most places would be what I suggest.

Observe cars: Plenty of older people are immature jerks and have no idea how to drive.

I do have to agree right there.Just because you are old does not mean you are wise/mature.

IMHO 18 is a fine age limit, just not for minecraft. Minecraft tends to have a very young userbase, so you're kinda strangling how many players you'll get.

And yea, the stereotype of young kids actually is true for the most part. Don't feel so left out; I was your age too once, and I was kept out of things like this too. All I can say is thank god now that I'm older and look back on how I acted.

I'd say that 16-17 should be the limit, though. That's when you're both not-prepubescent nor in the tortures of it. 18 is just the age most people correspond to adulthood, but I've got to admit that 16 year old me and 18 year old me weren't all too different, minus some terrible grammar.

Anyway, please read the server thread from the Minecraft forums to get a better picture. I'm not the best choice for writing advertisements, being the cynical misanthropist that I am. However I'm the only one (I think) from the server playing DF and placing an ad here was my idea. If you still wish to apply and get whitelisted, you have to deal with my company in the server as I tend to hang around there a lot. Unless of course I get banned for ruining the server's reputation here :p

Rex, that's still unfair. You should gauge people based only on how mature they act. If they're immature because they're twelve, or because they're just a jerk, it makes no difference. You can tell in either case, and the reason why they behave a certain way doesn't make any difference to how they behave. I was more coherent and mature than plenty of adults when I was twelve.

I was too. As eagle said, some people seem to not fit the magic "consider them non-sentient until some ill-defined period between 16 and 21 then make them officially a genius" pattern all too many people use.

I remember all too well being constantly horrified by the "your age group likes this" or "naw, kids aren't interested in that" or "we know you hate your parents-- so now yaddayadda" stuff. I still am sometimes!

Maybe it's just my personal 'mental conditions', but the whole "any male between 10 and 17 can't think about anything but fighting and boobies and being macho and hating parents" thing I hear everyone attributing any feeling a teenager shows (and I actually saw some signs of in certain people) is something I never went through. I remained a coherent, mostly rational (if unlikable) person from eight 'till eighteen.

I agree that a statistically large portion of the population between 6 and 20 is annoying, abrasive, deluded, and highly unlikable, but there are lots of stupid, rude, annoying, or just plain malicious people outside that range too.

I am seventeen, and I think myself to be quite mature; probably mature enough for a Minecraft server.

:/

Of course, I can't play anyways because of latency, but yeah. What's so magical about age limits? You're not supposed to do things before 18, then you turn 19 and BAM it's OK >.>

Of course, there -are- many many jerkish/immature 17-unders.

Thats the point of sterotypes. They aren't supposed to be definitions, they are just broad assumptions because X is common among them. Little kids are more likely to be immature then adults, and if you were an exception, good for you, but an age limit goes a long way towards filtering out baddies.

Maybe this is just me being so used to hearing them on VOIP and then stapling those high-pitched screams to every young person I see, but the fact remains that an age limit isn't exactly something to get your pants in a knot about.

No stererotype of any kind will ever contribute to a functioning community.  They only work to cause damage.

Yeah, and racial minorities are more likely to commit crimes, so we shouldn't let them interact with people who are less likely.. oh wait.

Like Girlinhat said, stereotypes are awful. I would rather people have to put up with those who fit the stereotype than unfairly punish those who don't.

Did you guys completely miss the part where he repeatedly told you that it's not a strict age limit, and that if you come off as mature but are a bit under it you could still be allowed in?

I think the argument here is that age shouldnt even be a factor in this. If you are looking for maturity, great, but age doesnt automagically turn a person less dickish. If a person is mature, then they are mature regardless of their age.

For example from the rules:
Quote
2. Mature players only: Our average age is 28 overall so the minimum age I think we will be after is 18 +. If you consider yourself mentally and emotionally mature, then perhaps apply and see how it goes? (Better be a great application as well)
(Emphasis added by me.)
The implication I get from this is that if you have two equally mature people, one 16 and one 20, then the 16 year old would not get in and the 20 year old would, despite them being equal in all other factors.

I don't understand. You guys concede that younger players are more likely to be immature, yet age filters don't make sense? That's the reason there's age limits on anything at all. Its not like you can tell whether someone will be mature enough or not for it without spending a lot of time with them beforehand; something you probably don't want to do for a minecraft server. Or when selling alcohol. Or smokes. Or anything. Age is the only immediate metric that we can work with that is related (even if its loosely) with maturity. It takes 2 seconds to get someone's age, but you might not ever know whether someone is mature or not.

I mean sure, in a perfect world where we know everyone and their maturity level, age limits are nonsensical, but they suddenly make a whole lot of sense when you're just the bouncer for a minecraft server.
