Help with !!MAGMA!!
« on: August 25, 2012, 06:19:26 am »

I need to get it from the magma sea to the surface for my moat. How do I use pumps?

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Pump_stack#Pump_stack

The DF wiki link. Most important things for a magma pump stack are:

-Use magmasafe materials
-Have an emergency shut down lever. Pump stacks create lag.
-Use 3*3 containment rooms rather than 1*1 ones to reduce lag due to temperature calculations.

I prefer the magma piston instead of a pump stack.  It's a lot easier quicker to build if you have many of z-levels to cross.  Alternately, you can try the minecart method.  With that said, the pump stack is conceptually the simplest to figure out.

Also, I forgot where I read it, but if you build the pumps starting from the top down, the stack instantly transports magma up, due to the order in which pumps moving liquids is processed.

Is there a river or another source of running water? If so, easy peasy, as each water wheel provides 100 power, so you should only need six(as axles eat power too.)

If not, try to get a windfarm running. Depending on your embark, each windmill generates, 0, 20 or 40 power.

If both don't work, you're screwed. Trying to get a water reactor going without infinitive water is hard.

Oh come on now.

In addition to what you said in your first post, I must point out that it's rather wise to build the pumps starting from the top and moving downward, not the other way around. Makes it much more effective.

Oh, and to connect from the power source to the pumps, you're going to need gear assemblies and axles.

Getting a water reactor might be relatively easy, but try doing it with cavern water or ponds as your only water supply...

Assuming you're not in a fully evil region and/or the caverns aren't filled to the brim with FB extracts, a bucket brigade should do the job nicely. I've done this before, after all.
