Basic question on castes.
« on: August 24, 2012, 09:06:52 pm »

I'm trying to create a caste in a civ I am working on so that they have superior skills, but I have absolutely no idea how to create a caste. The guide is not helping me at all. From what I got from it, if I place this in the kobold creature file, I should get a rare caste that has blue eyes and upped-natural talents that is only male?

Do I need to put a [POP_RATIO:NUMBER] in the female/male castes as well?

Code: [Select]
[CASTE:UNKI]

        [MALE]
        [CASTE_NAME:modbold:modbold:modbold]
        [POP_RATIO:10]

[SELECT_CASTE:UNKI]
[SET_TL_GROUP:BY_CATEGORY:ALL:SKIN]
[TL_COLOR_MODIFIER:GRAY:1]
[TLCM_NOUN:skin:SINGULAR]
[TISSUE_LAYER_APPEARANCE_MODIFIER:WRINKLY:0:0:0:0:0:0:0]
[APP_MOD_RATE:1:YEARLY:0:100:60:0:NO_END]
[APP_MOD_NOUN:skin:SINGULAR]
[APP_MOD_DESC_RANGE:0:0:0:1:25:50]
[SET_TL_GROUP:BY_CATEGORY:EYE:EYE]
[TL_COLOR_MODIFIER:PUPIL_EYE_BLUE:1]
[TLCM_NOUN:eyes:PLURAL]

Apologies if this has been asked before. I checked back a few pages and saw no question similar to this.

Yeah, make sure there's a Pop ratio in the regular male and female castes too.  If you want Male and Female versions of your special caste make them both separately.

And do I simply add [NATURAL_SKILL:MELEE_COMBAT:NUMBER] then it will have the upped-skills?

How did I forget to ask that in the OP.

Worth noting (since I hit this issue last night) that if you make your male (or female for that matter) caste into something special and lower the pop_ratio, then this can mess up marriage and population growth during a long worldgen.

Theres not enough suitable marriage partners, many queens will die without ever marrying, you almost never get proper inheritence, just New Lines being formed, and their population totals really take a hit if the gender is too rare.

Best bet is snakemupagus' idea of both male and female versions of the upgraded modbold.  Or if you really want only males to have this trait, then create a regular male caste and then also the special male caste.  (might actually be what you are doing here, cant tell from the snippet you posted, but thought i'd warn you just in-case :) )

I wish I had something cool to say about this.  Because it's really cool.

It's easy to fix the celem's problem if you add a male/female version of your caste with the same ratio.

Also don't forget that it's better to set a training speed of a skill high rather than a natural skill itself.

It's important mostly for generic skills to keep the job variety. Otherwise if you make a caste with high wrestling skill and make it to be a frequent caste, most of your people will be wrestlers (game won't make them swordsmen, crossbowmen etc ever).

On the other hand, it's a good way to make sure a caste is a specific enemy. For example, in Genesis4 I've made an "undead" race which consists of different types of undead. Zombies are wrestlers, skeletons are spearmen/bowmen, liches are macemen etc. This way I can be sure to have zombie wrestlers and liches with staves.
