First the NYPD shot that pitbull using bystanders as a backdrop, and now they injure 9 people? Hilarious, I'm going to love to see Bloomberg talk his way out of this one.

"Ban the NYPD! They're a public health risk, next they might hand big gulps to children!"

Still doesn't beat Anahiem's nice track record of killing 5 people, releasing police dogs on little kids, and hiring a woman to throw stuff at the police disguised as a protester.

Basically this. Not to forget wide media coverage of a shooting only encourages more to take place.
That sounds fucking stupid. Is there any research done into this?

Watched the video. Bad situation indeed. I'm not sure what they could've done better, except maybe aim better.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Criminals think gun control is a joke, anyone who really wants a firearm can find a way of getting one. Wait, lets not do this derail again.
Of course you need to have the last word in this discussion we're not meant to be having.

I seem to recall that the concept was specifically related to coverage of the killer, rather than the shooting. In other words, by delving into the life of the person that did it, they give them the attention they were seeking, which then encourages future potential mass-killers to do the same. One of the most important aspects was that the killer's face shouldn't be shown in any coverage.

Here's a bit more information on the idea.

Didn't the guy who killed John Lennon do it just to become famous?

There is, and the research indicates it's true. It doesn't so much change the number of people who do fucked up stuff as it changes the /type/ of fucked up they see as desirable. And yeah, it seems to indicate the way the coverage is handled seems to be a pretty big influence. At least part of it is the same reason a bunch of psychological issues have expressions that are incredibly culturally specific! Even when people go crazy, culture plays a big part in /how/.

I'm pretty sure I've seen evidence to suggest it has an even greater effect on suicides - a popular suicide of a certain type will lead to a rise in suicides of that type for a while afterwards. Of course, one of those types is murder-suicide.
