Damn it, another one!? Are there no political scandals for the media to go apeshit over or something?

To be fair, a shooting in Fayettenam is less a news story and more Tuesday.

You... Find that funny?
Admittedly, it's darkly amusing if you know Fayetteville. Like most military towns, its primary economy is based on strip clubs, tattoo parlors, pawn shops and gun stores.

EDIT: On the more serious side, 19 people were shot in Chicago last night, including 13 in a 30-minute timeframe.

So, yeah....that's a problem.  :-\

There was once an incident in Fayetteville where these two guys stationed at Fort Bragg apparently totally snapped, dressed up as stereotypical ninjas, and murdered an elderly couple with blowdart guns. My mother knew their grandson.

It's just that kind of place.

Yeah. As I've told people before, "The problem with military towns is that for many recruits, it's their first time away from home and out on their own. It's like a college town, but with less homework and more heavy weaponry."

Ugh... this upset me.

Sure, there's synchronicity at work here... we hear about one mass shooting, and suddenly all the other mass shootings become more visible. Still... the fact that mass shootings are a regular-enough thing here to happen back to back upsets me, and is indicative of the atmosphere of despair and anger permeating the country.

He snapped when he lost his job, and felt he'd lost enough to forsake his life and go on a rampage. The effects of the economic crisis are far broader-reaching than just financial hard times... though I doubt those that contribute to it would ever make this connection.

At this rate we might as well make a megathread.

FOX News? Gets an alert line at the top while their front page lead is "Romney tightens race before conventions" followed by "Norwegian Justice: 10 Years for Murder of 77?"
The Norwegian thing is technically true - the longest minimum sentence you can get is 10 years there.  In practice though it needs to be shown you are no longer a danger to the public at that time, and thus he will never be released.

Well, he'd been laid off for about a year. So it wasn't an immediate snap. Which isn't to say that a year of looking for a new job couldn't drive someone over the edge in itself....  :-\

Was it a robbery gone wrong or a planned shooting, though?

What is there to rob from the Empire State Building?

The lobby? Maybe he tried to rob something else nearby? I don't know, it was just mentioned as a possibility earlier in the thread.

It's 21 years actually (which he got), but otherwise you are correct.
