Also, I don't believe I was in an evil biome. Those are purple in that set right? Or if that's something different, would someone be kind enough to show me how to check? Based on the carnage in the nest-room, I think one reanimated and slaughtered the rest. My fortress looked like a zombie movie, sooo much blood spattered around.

Evil biomes also extend underground. If corpses reanimate on the surface they will also reanimate underground.

It only takes a single dead chicken, with death caused by any reason, to turn them all into zombies.

Zombie spirals? Treat them like tantrum spirals combined with a high pressure water flood, and you should be fine.

An evil biome can be one of 6 different colors, depending on what type of biome it is. The map legend on the wiki explains it all.

Thank you all so much for your fast replies. I can now rest easy understanding why the Great Turkey Zombie Apocalypse of 2012 happened. Totally gonna make a water trap this time around.

So instead of a horde of bloodthirsty turkeys you will have a horde of aquatic bloodthirsty turkeys in a room capable of both drowning and pecking the fortress to death.

NedeN: You can't drown zombies, if that's what you're planning. It's better to pasture them somewhere filled with cage traps, so if they turn they're captured.
