No but there where dead one;s pretty quick. They had all been stationary in their pastures and I notices they all just scatter.

As already mentioned, it sounds like a thrall/husk cloud. If it was nearly instant and the pasture didn't have a roof it was a cloud, otherwise they just started fighting because of being on the same tile and started a zombie spiral.

Either husk cloud somehow got tracked in, or you're in a reanimating biome.  They were probably in too small a pasture and started fighting.  Once one of them died, it got husked.  Since husks are immensely powerful, it immediately attacked and killed the rest of your birds.  Then the risen husks went and annihilated your dorfs.  The "looks kind of like a skull and crossbones" symbol on Phoebus, if it's flashing, means undead.

Thats the phoebus version of Ñ, aka Undead/reanimated husk blah blah. So you had your poultry outside, unroofed, and a husk cloud ran over them. Or you are in a reanimating evil biome.

Do clouds move through the z-axis, or are they like fire? Guess I need to try another evil biome, its been too long.

Husks and corpses are very different. Namely one is more dangerous than the other. Where were these chickens pastured? Indoors or outside? Indoors, zombies. Outdoors, zombies or husks.

Yeah thats a very good tale.  Especially to happen to someone so new, DF doesnt roll out a welcome mat, it hammers you flat into the ground and uses you for wiping it's feet on.

Incidentally I seem to remember clouds can climb a 1-z wall, may even be further but im pretty sure its at least 1-z.  I imagine this is to stop the weather getting stuck on hillsides without ramps.

I've seen reports that they can climb up to 5z, maybe even as high as 7z and that only way to not get hit by it is to completely seal the fort in, with ceiling and all. However that's just going off some threads I saw about them in evil biomes
