Building bags and containers
« on: August 23, 2012, 09:22:33 am »

If I build a bag or chest in an stockpile will they use the bag/bin to store items in it? This would be very useful when handeling seeds, gem, crafts, etc.

No, but if you build bins and barrels they will be used to store multiple items in the appropriate stockpiles.

Why do I like Dwarf Fortress so much?  It's hard to learn, harder to play, and downright impossible to win.

...

I mean, what's not to like?

Yes for bags (but don't build them, just make them at the appropriate workshop, the dwarves will use them on their own).
They are used to store seeds and powder of any kind, like dye, flour, sugar, gypsum powder. Also, multiple bags can be stored in one barrel (which is not advised for seeds because of cancel-plant-spam).

Ok, so if I build a barrel in the seed stockpile. They will store bags of seed in it and when they need to use it they will take the bag out of the barrel and plant the seeds?

Is there any way to get bags out of a barrel once it has been put in?

Don't build anything in the stockpile.
If you make a stockpile the appropriate maximum of bins or barrels is automatically chosen.

You can change the settings if you q the stockpile.

Barrels and pots are used for drinks and food, bins for crafts, gems, bars and such.

No easy way, I fear. But the dwarves will take what they need for any tasks out of barrels or bins or bags.

you can't build anything in a stockpile. it's either a stockpile and they'll get barrels and bags as needed and available, or a building that's only used for specific things

I have observed that they sometimes take the entire bin/barrel when they are cutting/encrusting gems, drinking, eating food, planting items etc..

When transporting items to a stockpile, with the new hauling system dwarves will often take a container from the stockpile, carry it around the fortress, collect the item, even if a single seed, and then bring the whole barrel or bin back to the stockpile. (But they may also collect several items in one turn sometimes.)

The only reason you can build a Bag is because it is the same item type as a Chest/Box/Coffer - if you build it inside an owned bedroom/office/etc. then it will be used as if it were a Coffer, not as if it were a bag.

[edit]

Also, the only types of containers you can build in this manner are Boxes (chests/coffers/bags), Cabinets, Weapon Racks, and Armor Stands. Nothing else can be built like that.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
