Confused about releasing creatures from cage (building)

The following sequence of events gets me stumped:
  • Capture a creature in a cage trap
  • Build a cage(j) using the creature cage
  • Go into the building options, find the captured creature and unassign it
What always happens is a stream of job cancellations stating that "release large creature needs empty cage". Not sure why, I have empty cages laying around and why should it be necessary in the first place?

I work around this by assigning the creature to a pasture.

You cannot unassign a hostile creature from a cage - if you try, a dwarf will simply pick up another cage from a stockpile and stuff the specified creature into it.

If you want to actually release it from the cage, you need to either link the cage to a trigger (and activate said trigger) or assign the creature to a Pit/Pond or Pasture activity zone.

Mystery explained then, thanks! I suspect the another cage needs to be built as building (or I am wrong about having the empty cages in the stockpile.)
