Training Qs
« on: August 23, 2012, 04:20:35 am »

I have a character who is a vampire necromancer, Superhuman strength, agility, toughness, high endurance. I've just found a Giant Sponge, and I heard somewhere that it is possible to train yourself up against them infinitely by just holding the appropriate arrow key. But I have some questions.
1. None of my stats are going up. Axeman is still expert (I'm using a bronze halberd) and fighting is still Great.
2. Is this because I'm a vampire? If so its new this version
3. I'm a competent swimmer but I still flounder in the river water. Why's that?
4. How do I check what time it is so I don't get frozen?
5. If I sleep/stay awake to skip the night, or if the river freezes, will the sponge go away?

Somewhat unrelated,
6. My vampire is Thirsty!  Can vampires die of thirst? Even drinking blood 3 times dosent make that go away, and then I'm full and can't do it again.
7. Why does it require an alt-y to attack a unconscious giant sponge?

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

What about skill gains?

Also, number 7 kinda speaks for itself.

It's annoying that I can't brutally kill someone unconscious.

In v31 I leveled to legendary knife user using a stolen bronze carving knife (damn slight hand injuries...), so I know skill gain was possible then.

Be very careful around giant sponges, it's a pain in the arse to kill them and they can crush your skull without and second thought (Without a first one, too, they don't have a brain)

If you're using the (e)at command to drink blood off weapons or the ground and such, that doesn't work (and that seems likely, since you end up full). What you have to do is approach a sleeping or unconscious NPC (yes, choking them unconcious, or various other violent means will work, if you don't kill them first) and then use the (e)at command, and an option will be on the list to "Drink Soandso's blood" or something to that effect. I've never gotten a message of being "too full" from it either. It is possible to drink until you drain them dry (takes a very long time in most cases, unless they've already lost a lot of blood from injury).

Just be warned: If you are spotted drinking blood from your victim by another person, even one of your own companions, everyone in the immediate area instantly becomes hostile, including your companions, and you'll be marked as an enemy of the civ.

As for skill increases, your physical attributes will be locked when you become a vampire. Strength, Agility, and so on will no longer increase. Mental attributes should still slowly grow. Skills like weapons and Fighter should still increase, but as far as I know, you gain nothing if you're hitting an unconscious foe. I usually don't let them lie unconscious for long, and finish them off with a good curb stomp anyway.

This assumes that the victim is part of the group of which your companions are. If you drink some random Kobolds blood, even in front of your companions they won't care; not hurting them to have the vampire drink the enemies blood.

I did not know that. Never had an opportunity in that regard, and thought it was more of the "Vampire! NOOOOOO!" kind of reaction.

I haven't been licking, I've been drinking random wildlife's blood like dingos (trying to do so before my zombies kill them.)

More important though is whether it is possible to die of thirst.

Also, the giant sponge has never even hit me.

Anyone know? I seriously don't want to lose this adventurer to something dumb, or this great oppurtunity.

If you really don't want to lose him, just backup the save or kill the process instead of quitting normally when you die.

I think skill gains are only counted when you kill something, but i'm not sure.

1. None of my stats are going up. Axeman is still expert (I'm using a bronze halberd) and fighting is still Great.
Once you become a vampire, your stats will never increase aside from a bonus you get from the curse. As for axeman remaining expert, attacking unconscious targets won't give you experience.
2. Is this because I'm a vampire? If so its new this version
It was supposed to be in the last version, but the tag was bugged and didn't work.
3. I'm a competent swimmer but I still flounder in the river water. Why's that?
Possibly you are jumping in. When you alt-move into the water, be sure to select the option that actually says you'll be moving into water and not air. If you move into the air, then you fall into the water and get stunned, which makes swimming rather difficult. It's also possible that the water is flowing quickly for some reason. Is there a waterfall nearby?
4. How do I check what time it is so I don't get frozen?
Shift-w. It tells you the approximate time of day and wether there are any particular temperature conditions on that particular tick. It won't warn you of future changes though, so be careful.
5. If I sleep/stay awake to skip the night, or if the river freezes, will the sponge go away?
Yes. If the river freezes, everything inside of it will die, including the sponge. Sleeping or waiting will simply allow it to move away through magical time magic.
6. My vampire is Thirsty!  Can vampires die of thirst? Even drinking blood 3 times dosent make that go away, and then I'm full and can't do it again.
You won't die, but your abilities are reduced. Just keep drinking, depending on how long you've been thirsty you could have a lot of blood to catch up on.
7. Why does it require an alt-y to attack a unconscious giant sponge?
Most wildlife isn't actually hostile towards you, it's just afraid of you. When you get close to wildlife, the game has it turn hostile and attack you. If it falls unconscious, it's no longer hostile. And, as I have mentioned, you gain no skill increases from attacking unconscious creatures anyway, so you should just throw stones around until it wakes up before attacking it again.

For skills, I recommend finding a Bronze Colossus and crippling him. Once they're down, they can usually never touch you, and you should be able to whale on him with a halberd all day. I'm super-Legendary six or seven skills thanks to this.
