I've found the same general distributions for all dwarves.  Even if they're all retar... cheesemakers, they can at least swing stuff occasionally.

you have an excess of expendable dwarves, and likely an excess of goblinite daggers. Its only natural to combine the two.

...by giving the dwarves the daggers, not sticking them in the dwarves.

And with historical dwarves as migrants if you are running forts in succession in the same dwarf civilization you can get migrants that were members of the former fort.  And if you were training them well you are going to get some very useful migrants!

This is a fresh world I just genned. The every wave of migrants have (at least 90% of them ) military training.
I'm planning to build outdoor barracks for every Squad I make...and I'm far from short on soldiers.

We don't like them because they are commonly useless for whatever application we need specialists for and therefore are only good as marksdwarves, haulers, and medical test subjects.

An average goblin's skill in it's weapon is somewhere around 5 iirc, but it takes a dwarf around 10-11+  to have a fairly high rate of survival of around 2/3 in melee. Getting a dwarf there without using a danger room or having skilled teachers will end up burning a few years. Dodge or shield lower than 9 or so isn't going to help when there's 4 or 5 goblins trying to stick the dwarf.Not to mention that squads with a non-uniform weapon renders demonstrations effectively worthless further reducing their value by invalidating their skill or crippling the learning rate. So... 3 in a weapon just saves you the unhappy thoughts they get from no military skills(drafted) while they plink away at animals or prisoners before dying to a syndrome or botched siege defense.

So yes... they are useless. We have to invest a monumental amount of resources to get an average quality good out that will be wasted when the firebreathing hummingbird dodges all the bolts and scorches half the active military.

1/5 Would hurl down a drop shaft to train doctors again.

There seems to be a very common distribution in the "average" military migrant.

Competent in any weapon skill, novice in armour, shield, and dodger, and novice or below in any civilian skills. I had the first 5 waves of a fortress like this, causing many problems when it came to feeding time, but attackers stood no chance when swarmed with 50 poorly armed, half naked dwarves.

There may be (or has recently been) a War going on during worldgen.  This tends to cause your civ to lose members, those that survive are those that manage to fight off an enemy or 2 at somepoint and thus gain skills.  Wars like this are also the best source of the random ubersoldiers you occasionaly get as migrants (barring old fort soldiers recycling or caste mods to produce such migrants)

Alot of my migrants are coming to me with 10-12 gobbo/troll kills... with competant and novice combat skills.... how?

A war against your civ either in history or currently on-going.  They did some fighting at some point along the line.

Nothing more military Dwarves doesn't fix. Seriously, 2 Dwarves for every goblin. Martial trances and knockbacks = Poor goblins

I'll admit that swarming does work but w/o pop hatches or a uniform movespeed 1 or 2 can get a ahead and be gangbanged by a goblin squad before the rest show up. Accumulating widows, ecstatic bachelors, and cripples is not a good way to show your dwarves you care or get that much close to a dwarves-only-die-of-old-age medal.

D'oh!  I forgot that the game assigns a random dwarf civ with new embarks.  The next new world I create, I'm going to stick to one civ.  Thanks for the reminder!
