Looky what I just got
« on: August 22, 2012, 10:09:51 pm »

I'm thinking of nicknaming a dwarf Thor and equiping him with this.

Description

I like to think of the ash as meaning that the hammer is on fire

AFAIK only density matters for hammer materials. So Lead>Platinum>Gold.
Is there any SCIENCE on this?

It would be really appropriate to name him Thor as the sacred tree Yggdrasil in the Norse Mythology is in fact an Ash. This is a seredipitous event for sure, he will be a magnificent hammerlord!

Find the dwarf depicted, and train him to wield the hammer. Keep him in training until he is legendary, and equip him with full masterwork/artifact adamantine armour. The send him out on the battlefield to have mashed goblin for dinner

Real life densities for these elements:
Lead: 11.35 g/cm^3
Gold: 19.32 g/cm^3
Platinum: 21.45 g/cm^3

Platinum is the third-densest element in existence, barring those that it's impossible to get enough of in one place to measure density.

From the Wiki, DF densities match these, with units of mg/cm^3 (or alternatively, g/mm^3).

Someone Mod in Osmium :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osmium

"Densest Stable Element" @ 22.59 g·cm−3

"Osmium has a blue-gray tint " the evil twin of Candy?

On the other hand, from the same page:

Quote
Osmium is the least abundant stable element in the Earth's crust with an average mass fraction of 0.05 ppb in the continental crust.

That's 100 times rarer than platinum. There could be a tiny, tiny chance of getting it from smelting copper, nickel or platinum ores. Then the question is what you can actually use it for.

Considering that it would be 100 times more valuable 'bling' as platinum it would make quite the trade-good / decoration.
And osmium bolts ....

Why would you just sell something insanely rare and valuable? You should be using it to murder things.
