I can't seem to get my dwarves to make charcoal, even though I have a wood furnace, and I have enabled the "wood burning" labour on several of my dwarves. For some reason, they seem to be ignoring my orders, even though they have the labour to do the task, there's enough wood, and the locations are all accessible.

I had tried taking a dwarf and getting rid of all labours except the "wood burning" one, but for some reason, she just wants to play with her family in her room. I've also tried creating a burrow around the woodpile and wood furnace, but she still doesn't do anything, and is apparently still unemployed, but now lost in the wood pile.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? If I am missing something incredibly obvious, please point it out to me.

Did you use the manage work orders queue to make it and don't have a manager assigned with a throne assigned to him? Or did you queue it up yourself into the wood furnace. Are your dwarfs able to use wood for carpentry? Did you do assign a stockpile to the wood furnace without wood in it?

First off, thanks for answering my post.

I queued it up myself to begin with. That was ignored.
I tried using the manager, who seems to have everything he needs. Also ignored.
My carpenterdwarf can use the wood, he's been making beds for the latest arrivals. I'm not sure that's the problem. 

I'm going to try assigning a full woodpile to the workshop, and see if that works.

You didn't mentioned anything about fuel.... do you have any sort of fuel like coke or charcoal? or tried a magma furnace? you do need something to start the wood burning process in the first place and make sure you don't run out of at least 1 bar of coke/charcoal to make new ones... if I recall correctly you need 1 fuel bar + 1 wood log and get 2 charcoal bars. The only way to just turn wood into charcoal is using a magma furncace.

I don't think actually using the "wood burner" requires fuel. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have used it earlier with no other fuel. That's sort of why it's so crucial that I get it started. I have a tonne of bituminous coal I would like to start turning into refined coal, but without fuel that I can get just by burning wood (charcoal,) and no magma it's useless. My furnaces are growing cold, and my blacksmithing dwarves are turning into drunks.

My bad, I got mixed up with the smelter and making coke from bitumous coal or lignite, the wood burner should just burn wood without any fuel...


Have you checked the workshop with 't'? maybe you accidentally forbid the stones/blocks used to build the workshop? it happens when you mass forbid things with the z stocks menu.

That's interesting. I guess that would effectively shut down the workshop, eh? In any case, I just solved the problem, by demolishing the workshop and rebuilding it completely. I don't know what's different, but it seems to have done the trick.

It could be that you assigned a stockpile to the workshop, and the stockpile was empty of wood. In such case rebuilding helps (i do it sometimes since there's no way i know of to clear stockpile-workshop links)

you mean the new stockpile system? easy 'q' the stockpile use '+' and '-' to navigate through the links (the gives to and takes from list that is created at the bottom when you add new links) and hit 'd' to delete the link you want, if you delete all the links and make sure that the stockpile orders are set to take from and give to anywhere it should work like an old stockpile.
