embarking on towns

I am aware that in older versions you could embark on top of towns and fortresses but now the embark option is shaded out and i would like to know if i can somehow edit the raws and be able to embark on structure such as towns, towers and mountain halls.

I remember that it was possible, but it bugged the persons game right out. Caverns on the surface, magma raining from the sky, that sort of thing.

Use the "Just Embark" utility. Should be able to find it in the modding section.

Note that now if you embark on a town the inhabitants will no longer be friendly like they were in the past. From what I've heard if you embark every human considers you an "interloper" or something similar and descends on your helpless 7 dwarves in a vast killing swarm, probably tearing them limb from limb in a horrible fashion in the first minute or so. I think I remember some stories right after Toady put that change in where somebody managed to survive because they walled themselves into a nearby house, but it still took them several tries before they managed to get a fort to last more then a minute or two.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
