Question about digging and rock chance.
« on: August 22, 2012, 03:13:01 pm »

So obviously I spent a little time away from DF and in the current version I notice that A: Bituminous Coal now gives 9 as opposed to 3 because of the chance of digging rocks is now based on a percentage rather than skill level (Old legendary mining every rock dug produced stone) and B: Stones in general only "drop" 25% of the time unless small clusters or adamantine. Was the decision to do this based on the annoyance of having tons of rocks in the way of your putting things places, like a stockpile in rock rather than soil/sand would have rocks taking up space in it? It does make sense. Just thought I'd ask if you guys could explain it to me. (Also Mayday hasn't updated to .11 yet for some reason >.>)

I'm not all too sure, but it might have been from abuse of the tactic of having legendary dwarves mine out all your important things, while new comers to the job dug out anything you didn't want it the way.

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

I'm not your average Bay12er. I care about my drunken midgets.

I didn't like the weird clunky metagame surrounding mining skill, so I made the drop rates uniform.  Gems drop at 100%.  Ore drops like rock, but you get more bars per ore now.  Stone drop is 25% now, I think, but the ore change makes it closer to legendary bar numbers for those.  There seems to be plenty of rock around, and I'm not sure which megaprojects would actually be affected, but we'll see how that goes.

The metagame being mine around the ore and things you want until you can assign a legendary miner.

It's a singleplayer game though, why would it matter?

Personally, I hated the old system. It meant I got OCD and didn't mine stuff until my miners were legendary from digging soil. That was stupid. And now I can dig FREELY WITH NO WORRIES BWAHAHA.

I like the current system, less stress on getting the elite miner to carefully chisel out the precious ores. I'd like to have a separate designation for mining carefully to get stone/ores and drilling right through things like currently, though. It helps to make trading somewhat more valuable as well, to me.
