Banshee Engine - A venture into blatant self-promotion
« on: August 22, 2012, 02:50:53 pm »

The Banshee Engine is an engine I've been developing which is targeted at making ANSI-based games very easy to make. It features Lua scripting and a ton of conveniences as well as huge measures taken for optimization. Games designed for the Banshee Engine are pretty damn portable - they'll run even on decade-old hardware (I have verified this myself) and the engine will be compiled for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Along with the engine I'm developing a game called Titan in which you play as a detective tasked with uncovering the truth behind an apparently alien attack upon a research installation on that Saturn's moon.

You want to give us some information?  This is Other Games, not Cryptic Advertisements.

I'm not sure if it's intentional, and I'm not sure if there's anything you can do about it, but the way that you've placed the eyes combined with the eyebrows makes the eyes look like big noses, especially for (going from the top left) the 3rd, 4th and 5th character. Maybe bump their eyes up a block?

Otherwise, looks promising - you've got some talent with Ascii art.

Unless you want to cultivate the impression that you only care about eyeballs and page hits.

There is, in fact, a link the the Devlog at the bottom of the post.

I think I understand what you mean but I can't get myself to see it that way. Apart from moving the eyes (which considering the constraints is a lot easier said than done) what else do you think might help the readability?

I wish more posts only had text in the form of a screenshot of some code.

There is, in fact, a link the the Devlog at the bottom of the post.

I clicked that link and it took me to another forum post that was also just some random gifs with no information.

You might have scrolled down just a little bit.

Maybe try replacing the eyebrows with the eyes? I like how the first guy looks (eyes above the nose, no eyebrows.)

The woman looks like she's snorting, with her eyes shut.

Doing it like the first one actually severely limits options for variation in appearance, it simply isn't practical to do them all that way. I understand what you're saying but doing what you suggest looks really bad, and as you pointed out usually leaves no room for eyebrows which do a lot more for readability than is immediately obvious.

You might've done these forums the common courtesy of writing at least a sentence explaining exactly what it is you're attempting to advertise.

...Though I did actually scroll down and skim the entire page of forum posts. There were seven posts by you. Four of them are just images with no explanation. One is some sort of console log. One is you saying saving and loading is implimented and demanding praise for your work. And the last is you asking for help working on it.

So I still don't know what the hell this thing is. And while I'm not an advertising man by trade, I'd wager is a pretty huge failing of any advertising effort.

In response to your criticisms I've already updated the OP with a description.

And you're completely right, I'm no good at advertising. The link is to a devlog that shows the progress of the program as it's made which is pretty difficult to sensibly do through any medium apart from images. I'm not looking to advertise, I don't have any product, I'm looking to bring a little more attention to something I'm working pretty damn hard on because that makes it easier to push through it. I really do thank you for saying so though, but I also wish you might be less abrasive about it.

Hmm, see, this is where it comes down to personal preference; I like the second one more than the first.

In the end though, it's your art style: If you like it, keep it.
