The Elder Scrolls games
« on: August 22, 2012, 07:45:48 am »

Hello!

I don't see any current thread going on about these games so I make a continuation to the last one, what Toady closed. Hopefully no personal vendettas will undo this one (including mine).

Here is where the older discussion took place:

While I voted for Morrowind in the last thread, I realized that while I would love to like Morrowind, I have way more fun playing Skyrim.

We really didn't need another thread... :[

Anyway, I'm going hipster mode and picking Oblivion before you mainstreamers max out the Morrowind bar.

Yeah. Is there anything more to be said that hasn't already been said? Can't we just leave TES to its individual threads and leave the cross game conflict to die? Folks on b12 apparently can't keep the vitriol down when it comes to th'elder scrolls games being considered in bulk, and there's no reason to give Toady more work if we don't have to :-\

I get a lot of shit for this, but Skyrim is the first Elder Scrolls title that I've found fun for more than a couple hours.

The off the wall bugginess, 80s generic high-fantasy setting, the horrible tropes, uninspired characters, boring quests, and stiff combat really turned me off to the series.

Some of those issues are still part of Skyrim, but I do find the exploration a lot more exciting than in previous titles. The world actually feels fun to wander around in, and you aren't forced into the storyline with timed quests (I'm looking at you, Daggerfall).

What I can hardly understand here, is that people tend to avoid arguments like the plague. We have to accept that we are not robots, or a unified hive, to see everybody agreeing in everything. Why don't we welcome this as an opportunity to exchange ideas, and enrich our knowledge about others? We could find certain aspects of the discussion, what is harder to reach in a "fluffy" environment.

Of course that doesn't mean Argumentum Ad Hominem or the like.

Morrowind is the best. Also, OpenMW is being made, which is going to rock socks when it's done.  It's an open-source engine re-implementation.

Daggerfall is also pretty awesome, though it's graphically suck-fest.  But yeah, it's also got an engine re-implementation in development.  The XL Engine.

Mostly cause quite a few arguments here have been argued to the point that everyone is just repeating themselves over and over and all that can be said has already been said. It gets really tiring, specially when you factor in that said arguments also occur endlessly outside of Bay12. And then there's some (me included) who just want to enjoy the games and prefer to discuss their good points instead of their failings. Also arguments are just kinda unpleasant to see happen, specially on the internet.

Except it always ends in argumentum ad hominem. There's been like three or four TES threads locked specifically because of that. People around here don't shy away from argument, but we do like to avoid discussions that have demonstrably been proven, repeatedly, to end poorly. We'd rather Toady be coding or enjoying himself (so that he can code later) instead of dousing flamewars, and certain subjects have repeatedly devolved into just that.

Three or four TES threads in which everything that can be said about the TES series is pretty much said -- there's not really any new ideas to exchange. B12 has pretty much gone over the TES series with a fine tooth, occasionally flaming, comb.

Everything else (actual game experiences, new and interesting mods, etc.) fits better into specific threads for specific games, and is a bit better and not drawing fire.

But hey, if you're interested in starting a mess, you're interested in starting a mess. Can't stop you. Just hoping a little good word could save th'boss Toad some time at some point in the future.

Anyway, ninja'd a bit, et al.

I've only played Skyrim and Oblivion, and I enjoyed Skyrim the most of those two.  Oblivion lost all its fun when I finally got around to reading how its skill system worked.  Then I couldn't stop myself from trying to level up "Properly", and it wasn't fun anymore.   :P

What I don't like about Skyrim is that they spent so much work making a huge and beautiful world filled with characters and giving you lots of freedom, but the combat, magic, and pretty much all the rest of the gameplay is kind of simple and frankly not very well thought out.

Of course, who cares about all that when you've got so much exploring to do.   :P  I got about 90 hours of gameplay out of it just wandering around.

As a couple of others have noted, what is the purpose of this thread? What is it trying to achieve that the other threads did not? Do you expect people to paraphrase/repost the opinions they have shared before?

Morrowind has atmosphere. The terrain made me want to explore, it was different everywhere you went. Oblivion was all the same, and skyrim was a fraction of the uniqueness of morrowind, with snow covering half of it.

You confound argument with an exchange of ideas.  They are not at all the same.  As Toady's footnote at the end of the last thread pointed out, moderation of a discussion is what is needed, not an escalating series of injurious attacks.

Morrowind had a pretty amazing setting that felt simultaneously alien, fantastical, and believable (to me, anyway). That's rare. I enjoyed the political tension, too; Vvardenfell reminded me of a sort of backwater Mississippi circa 1800 as if it had been invaded by a modern Roman Empire. Except in this case, Mississippi is run by an elven god-king.

As Frumple pointed out, there really isn't anything more to be said.  We've already meticulously cataloged the merits and flaws of TESII: Buggerfall, TESIII: Walking and Reading and More Walking, TESIV: Fucked-Up Anime Modding Platform, and TESV: Todd Howard's Big Dumb Barbarian Wank Fantasy.  Most of us would probably agree that they all have some features that make them enjoyable, and I'd say that forcing Toady to moderate the same argument over and over again is a selfish tax on someone who has better things to do.
