Sometimes I wonder, "What cool stuff should I build?"
« on: August 22, 2012, 12:45:14 am »

Oh sure I build the dining area, the workshops, the stockpiles, and the sleeping quarters, but what kinds of stuff should I do? Maybe I'm creatively stagnant. :/

Those are neat ideas, but rather vague.

1. Build a house.
2. Build a house next to that house.
3. Build a house on top of those houses.
4. Build a house next to that house.
5. Build a house on top of that house.

Rinse, repeat. Dwarf Fortress.

So, Giant temple of blood, surrounded by magma, and has possibly chained demons. Horrifying sacrifices to a unamed entity. Ceremonies where blood is poured on the temple.  What else?
What else do you need?
Everything. For instance, Should we have a massive arena for epic combat? 3 FBs (Are they on the same side? Strong FBs, of course, webspitters, or necrotizers) against a entire captured goblin horde. A Minotaur against a captured elven caravan.

Or, a race track where we set dogs on elves and goblins. Oh, or Magma! OR BOTH. Though, not simultaneusly.

Or, a room where we obsidianize goblins and elves, then make stautes of them.
These are more specific.

I'm working on my first basic arena.  It is for goblin slaughter, with a viewing area in the main dining hall.  My military isn't well trained yet, so I'm hoping a little wonton murder helps.

It's a bit tedious to link levers to all the cages every time- suggestions?

I'm considering sending armored dwarves with training weapons against the disarmed goblins, make it slow and tedious with hopefully lots of skill up!!

Drain an Ocean.... farm mermaids or sea-serpents.

look up dwarven childcare...profit.

cut out the middleman by making an execution chamber that drops goblins directly into the circus.

Look up.  You see all that sky there?  That's free space in which to erect mighty ramparts, archer and lookout towers, mazes of death, and possibly a nice strawberry garden.

Yeah I had this same problem, after linking up 20 cages for the 5th time I remembered about mass pitting. Much easier! Check the wiki.

For an arena I built once, I dropped the prisoners into a 1x1 room with a hatch for the floor, which opened into the arena, so I could dump all my prisoners in at once and release them into the arena at once with the pull of a lever.

Here's a tip, though... Use Russian characters in your WPA5 passphrase. If your spontaneous AI is anything like my spontaneous AI (not as aggressive as yours, good conversation, but actually worse than me at chess*), it can't handle any character outside of the CODEPAGE 437 list.

*I hope. It could just be lulling me into a false sense of security.

Capture a dragon (or a cave dragon, titan, beast, etc), then proceed to make a temple to it underground. Chain it to the wall. Find a mate and breed dragons.

At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

I was having this issue recently, too. Fiddling with trying to finally figure out aquifers allayed a great deal of boredom for me recently.  You might ask yourself "What's something I've been afraid to learn/haven't tried yet?" and do that.

See how far you can move a minecart full of magma using one mini-reactor.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

See how far you can skip a minecart over the ocean.
