The Nameless One went through all the trouble in his quest to die and in the end when he does he goes to hell, leaving his companions behind.

The ending to Bastion hits you suddenly and hard.

Genocide implies that killing was the actual goal. Correct me if Im wrong, but they got in the way rather than killing them being the main goal.

Killing a whole bunch isnt genocide, otherwise most characters in games would be commiting genocide.

Genocide is pretty much killing off an entire genus.
So for example if i set off on a mission to kill all members of species x then i'm attempting genocide.
If i murder the last one then it's genocide.

So the term "mass murder" would fit the kid a bit better.
But then again he HAD to kill them so they don't kill him one way or another.

Karateka was depressing.  As a kid I worked long and hard to make it all the way through to the final boss.  I finally managed to defeat it and I ran into the next room to rescue the princess.  Then she kicked me in the face and killed me in one shot.

Turned out you had to slowly walk up to her or something else she would assume you were an enemy.

I know it technically has a "happy ending" but no matter what you do it always feels like the seperation of an entire family. Everyone goes their seperate ways.

It feels like such a goodbye to all these people and faces I knew it actually overshadowed everything else.

Once again it really couldn't end any other way.

It also ends with the two protagonists, your best friends, leaving you after the death of your friend Mono. It is actually really sad and honestly I can't play much after the end of the game because the ranch just feels so lonely.

They were always there around town or the ranch to talk to you.. but they are just gone and people don't even talk to you anymore.

Yay, you made it back to Sol after your journey through the reconstructed Sol node led you through an alternate universe where the Lucifer destroyed everything. But your battle-group was secretly sent to spearhead a war between the United Earth Federation (UEF) and the GTVA.

Yay, you're turning around a seemingly hopeless war via the capturing a huge logistics ship, and have just cornered a GTVA destroyer around Saturn. If you take out this destroyer, there will be a significant chance of hurting the war's popularity in the GTVA enough to force the GTVA to sue for peace. Unfortunately, right at your moment of victory, a destroyer which was believed to be in an entirely different system jumps in and wipes out every ship in your battle-group but your own frigate, which ends up crash jumping into decaying orbit around the sun. Turns out that the whole thing was a trap laid by GVTA Admiral Steele. With the crushing losses of this engagement, the UEF has absolutely no chance left of winning the war, and you personally are left to watch your badass captain/love interest die of radiation poisoning.

So the entire universe is a video game.  Ok sure, a little meta but it avoids cliche by a good mile, so it works.  But the big admin dude wants to delete everything because all you little ai npcs decided to hack yourselves with heraldric genetics.

Cue the main heroes being heraldric geneticized by their parents to somehow enter 'reality' to kick the big bad's backside.

But what does the big bad do when he loses?  He hits the delete button.  Well that sucks.  Everything and everyone in the universe is deleted.  But the heroes (Or at least Fate) is still capable of thought, from my guess due to the genetic work.  And he apperantly imagines the universe back into existence. 

Yay!  The entire universe was just obliterated out of existence, but it's ok, because I'll just live in my imaginary world where nothing bad happened.

Yay, Doctor Light invents a few robots, including megaman. Albert Wily invents robots to kill said robot. Then Light and Wily create X and Zero respectively. Fast forward into the future, and the Maverick Wars happen. Further down the road, the Elf Wars happen, the whole world is teetering on the edge of death, some evil guy called Weil goes on exterminating everyone and Zero dies killing Weil.

Even further into the future, mankind and reploids have merged in physiology (man gets augmentations, reploids get aging, etc.) and things seem better. But no, there's still some shards of Weil, which brings great power and insanity to those who want to use it. Then the whole Game of Destiny happens, where an evil guy starts infusing his own blood to a number of survivors from an attack he started somewhere to enable them to use Biometals.

That evil guy gets beaten eventually, and everything is good.

NO. Megaman Legends happen in the far future, and if you've finished that game, you know that the whole of Mankind bit the dust, leaving only its 'rogue' clones. Oh and the sea level is higher.

Then Capcom decides to kill the series by not making or announcing Megaman games. D:

It all started as a typical 'Hero saves the day' game. It gets worse.
