ACTRAISER 1 and 2 SPOILERS!

So I have been thinking of Actraiser 1 and 2 and the ending as it applied to me and everything I think about it I start to feel sad.

You are a benevolent diety who had risked its life to protect everyone and the world and destroyed the ultimate evil, you helped people individually making their dreams a reality, growing towns and cities and making people strong and prosperous entirely out of your own good will. You even got gifts and presents from thankful people.

Yet as soon as you are done, as soon as the ultimate evil is destroyed, and people are at peace.

You are forgotten. Your one shrine, your body, isn't looked after and people move on forgetting all the great deeds you have done all the effort you have put into making the world a better place for everyone. All the battles against impossible odds. It isn't that it they are ungrateful but that it almost had to happen, that a world you contructed would be a world that ultimately doesn't need you.

It is even sadder in the second game because this time you sacrifice everything to stop evil and are still forgotten.

It was a sad ending that only gone to show the true benevolence of that diety. He never wanted to be thanked he only wanted people to live in peace and happyness.

The way a game ends always puts emphasis on the way the game went on. It is the final curtain call on the themes, characters, and the story. Yet when these shifts of tone arn't a bad thing, they instead emphasise something else in the plot. Afterall what is more heroic then a sacrifice that is paid for, going for a love that cannot be won, or just comming to grips with reality? They can often be our favorite endings and can even make everything that came before it better or worse.

So it makes me wonder.

What are some of the saddest most depressing endings from otherwise non-depressing games in your eyes?

Crono Trigger's canon ending is quite depressing: In fact, no ending allows Magus to be reunited with his sister, and the main character's mom goes missing in the normal ending.

And in the alternate normal ending, Crono is missing.

The only reason this might not apply is because Crono Trigger is sort of a depressing game, especially when you see the "future".  Thankfully, it's all better if you get to most endings.

Haven: Call of the King Spoilers

You spend the entire game trying to fulfil a prophecy to call back the true king and defeat the evil overlord that has taken his place. But when you finally succeed in this triumph, it doesn't work. The evil overlord kills the king and leaves the protagonist chained to a rock to slowly starve to death, with no hope of escape and that is where the game ends.

The game in the same family as Actraiser that got to me was Terranigma. I can't even remember how it ended, only that it made me terribly sad.

Well, obviously the original Diablo is kind of a downer. Especially given the epilogues in Diablo II for all three character types from the first game.

Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

Deus Ex: Invisible war.
It's been a long time since I played it so I can't remember the details. During the game, you're working with these different people with the promise they would help rebuild the world. In the end, it's revealed that all of them want complete control over everything, leading to a world where everyone else is denied free will. And if you fight all of them, everything just falls apart for no good reason.

I dunno. I played a vengeful and evil god in Actraiser, at least that is how I liked to think of myself what with the earthquakes and stuff. Forgetting me forever is probably for the best.

I liked to think of my "destroy everything" earthquakes in ActRaiser as urban renewal.  8)

In my opinion, the character endings of some of the NPC's in the Baldur's Gate Trilogy were quite sad. Especially the endings of the evil characters.

While not in the same vein, since it isn't at the ending but at the last final stretches of the game

The Bizarre Adventures of Woodruff and the Amazing Schibble of Azimuth (Holy name batman!)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In fact in some ways it does make the ending depressing because there is no happy ending in this situation.

I think you were actually incapable of harming someone, just destroying homes.
