Don't be too cautious. Disaster makes for good storytelling.
Yeah usually I use DFHack and exe killing to save myself from some of the more unfair stuff like a goblin ambush within a year when we've barely built crap. But for this? No holds barred craziness is the flavor of the week.
If you have interesting features, short videos showing them off can be very enjoyable.
With the ; recording thing, huh?

Another mention for Nist Akath here. Its the one that got me really into reading the community forts, and even after reading many others, it is still the one I remember the most.

Setting your thread up like it might be a good start. And as others have mentioned a dangerous embark makes for better storytelling than a peaceful one. Nist Akath was in an evil undead tundra with hordes of skelks.
