Prolog:
I finally get to leave the Mountainhome! I've had enough of that place. Too many "nobles", too many rules, not enough creativity. I'm a stonecrafter, I CRAFT things. I don't crank out endless successions of mugs, damnit.
All that is behind me now, we're off to found a new mountainhome! Our leader, Urist McLeader claims that he knows the location of the only volcano on this land. We're off to find it.
We've brought the usual sorts of supplies, plus we managed to convince the butcher back "home" to give us both male *and* female horses to pull the wagon so we'll have a stable meat supply.
1st Granite
Armok save us, Urist is an idiot. A dead idiot at that. We were mounting a mountain that felt warm under foot. We said, "Urist, don't you think this might BE the volcano?". "NO, for the last time NO! I know where the volcano is! We're still a day away!" he said.
Right before he, while looking back to yell at us, drove the lead horses off a cliff and fell after them.
Thankfully the harness on the wagon snapped or we'd really be in for it. As it is... Well, the meat supply isn't going to be stable. It turns out that along with not taking critisizm well Urist was also wrong. He did find the volcano, just not quite how he intended. And the bastard took both female horses with him RIGHT INTO THE VOLCANO. What an idiot. Here's what we have left:
Seeing as the expedition leader wasn't around anymore we held an election in the classic fashion. Fath Mengostath was the last to pass out, so she's the new expedition leader. I've drawn the place we stopped at, the very peak of the mountain. Not exactly convenient. Oh well, we'll get to work.
2nd Granite
Now this is funny, Fath Mengostath admitted to me that she has no clue how to run a fortress and asked me to help. I figure I can at least do a better job than the idiots at the mountainhome, so I'll do it.
To start with, there are entirely too many trees around here. While the miners are mining, Sodel will cut down as many as he can manage.
7th Granite
The miners have finished the temporary storage hall we can get the supplies underground where they belong.
I've spent my time doing some prospecting on the surface. Unnerving as the surface may be, I have found clay, gold, tetrahedrite and black sand on the west side of the mountain. This place looks promising.
8th Granite
I set the miners to digging out a lava reservoir and workshop area down on the same level as the black sand. One of the farmers said that we should have beds first but Fath reminded him that he'd been the first to fall in the election. That shut him up.
9th granite
The miners have reported finding both galena and native silver! Things are looking pretty good here, if we can find some Iron and some Coal or Lignite we'll be all set. Even as it is we'll have plenty of cash for buying iron and supplies to make steel.
12th granite
The miners keep harassing Fath every time they find more metal, they found some native gold and more galena.
In the mean time, I had Fath mark out a couple farm plots and order the farmers to start doing their job for a change.
A rat has been spotted in the temporary stockpile, this displeases me.
14th Granite
HEMATITE! THE MINER FOUND HEMATITE! PRAISE ARMOK!
4th Slate
That's it. I've slept on the floor one too many times. I've ordered beds to be manufactured.
I also laid out the bedrooms, plenty for the peons, a bedroom/office/dining room complex for the "leader" Fath. It backs up to the volcano lava tube to keep her bedroom nice and warm. And remind her to listen.
My complex will be on a different floor.
11th Slate
Work begins on the lava reservoir. The miners may have placed Fath's bedroom in the supply shaft.
14th Slate
The lava feed tube does go right through Fath's bedroom. I've ordered a wall built to block it off.
18th slate
It took two weeks, but I finally have a bed to sleep in.
That's one slow carpenter.
I've set to crafting a door, a floodgate, and some blocks. I can express myself a bit with the door at least.
13th Felsite
The idiot farmers are letting plump helmets ROT in the farms! One has been ordered to do NOTHING but farm. Idiots.
I'm making a
special floodgate to decorate Fath's bedroom.
8th Hematite
I can see why Fath was uninterested. This is maddening!
The miners managed to completely screw up every direction for the lava feed shaft. If we weren't short on picks I'd have one sacrificed.
I'm not sure how much more of this leading crap I can take.
12th Hematite
The damned farmers are STILL not doing their job.
The woodworker has been assigned to farm. Slacker.
More distressingly, a Mosquito woman has been spotted nearby. That's a frightening concept.
13th Hematite
I've ordered the construction of a still. Though I may need to draft a brewmaster as the farmers are clearly incompetent.
24th Hematite
Tragedy! The brewer finished a batch only to find that there were no barrels!
I was up for the task of storing the brew, thought I doubt anyone else is interested in it now.
20th Malachite
I've ordered the miners to let the lava flow! Finally we're getting somewhere.
Some migrants showed up today with horrific tales to tell. Something about living dead and green skinned savages.
There's a woodworker, a craftsdwarf, a ranger, FOUR children, and a fisherdwarf. Not the most useful of groups, but it could be worse.
15th galena
WHO THE HELL SET OUT WITH NO METALSMITHS!
Armok save us if that idiot hadn't already burnt himself I would hang him in a TREE!
I've drafted a couple of furnace operators (none of them, either!) and assigned a metalsmith. Dwarf'd better learn quick.
I'm doing some furnace work as well.
17th Galena
THREE thieves showed up!
We need traps.
25th Galena
Driven by the need to repel thieves and acquire meat, I have had a fishery worker and a range drafted into the militia. Their first target? A Giant Kakapo, whatever that is. It looks like it's already had some issues, I think I can see its spleen...
30th Galena
Militia never did catch the thing. Oh well.
I've ordered some Gold furniture to spruce my living area up a bit. Also some for the "Leader" Fath to keep her mouth shut.
1st Timber
Some nutjob called Mafol has started acting sneaky and stealing Dacite boulders. How he thinks he can manage that without me noticing is beyond me.
8th Timber
Late autumn already? We have no trade goods and the caravan is about to arrive!
FULL PRODUCTION! Crap!
28th Timber
Mafor finally finished his.... thing. It's a figurine of some doofus.
I discovered that I'm the only one with any idea what things are worth around here, hence I did the trading. I think we got a good deal. Mostly I bought food and sacks for the glass industry, plus leather and cloth to make more sacks.
I have declared myself to be a Broker. I'm a noble now! Ha!
12th Moonstone
My quarters are coming along nicely.
Fath has taken it upon herself to engrave my walls. So far she's done three engravings of that figurine...
22nd Moonstone
Our new entrance is finished, this should work well.
5th Obsidian
Fath, our "leader" has started giggling incessantly and stopped engraving my quarters. Don't know what her problem is, but I don't appreciate it.
11th Obsidian
Fath finished her project... It's a dacite scepter with a one eye'd demon on it, done in turqiose. It's actually pretty awesome.
15th Obsidian
I guess that scepter helped Fath's artistic skills, she's on a Masterpiece rampage!
20th Obsidian
A snatcher! Foiled by the new entrance design. Now to figure out what to do with it...
21st Obsidian
Another snatcher! This one interrupted the Mechanic Mafol while Mafol was replacing the cage the first snatcher was caught in.
Amusingly after Mafol and the goblin both fled (cowards!) another snatcher came in. It ran into the glass serrated disk trap and got spit right back out the door. HA!
1st Granite
Spring! I've had enough of this leading business, the inane details a dwarf has to deal with to lead are amazingly frustrating. I'll stick to my crafting from this point, Fath is going to have to step up and deal with it.
We're doing pretty well, this is an incredibly rich location!
