Somehow, I have this gut feeling I am the only sane dwarf who settled on something that would NOT qualify as a death world of sorts. Embarked by a volcano, with calm surroundings, an aquifer, flux stone, and a fair amount of metals. (All the better to make steel with, of course... leaves me to question if something like coke will get me more steel bars in the long run with a magma smelter or if I am just wasting coke in general, and should opt for mere charcoal.) On a couple last notes, in late autumn at the moment, and I apologize if I produce a tattered story to tell. (It's just that I think my story will be dwarfed in comparison to the others, no pun intended.)
Edit: Here we go! One dwarven world and story, coming up! (Spoilering to avoid a wall of text stretching the topic to no end.)
The last spoiler of the three happen to be the story in all three of them. This first image is of the embark location. (Yes, I opted for a relatively tame settlement.)
Pre-Granite 1st, 6: The big guy on charge had chosen seven dwarves at the year 5 mostly out of overpopulation, and rumors that supplies were getting low at that fortress. Adil, being elected the leader of the expedition, opted to move onward, taking the reins of the wagon, whilst drinking some dwarven beer and made haste right for the volcano of the world. I just hope that Adil doesn't try anything with the wagon at all...
Granite 1st, 6: Whoever thought letting Adil drive the wagon is mad! The way we lost the wagon... It's ridiculous! Anyways, we did manage to have our supplies saved from this horrendous accident, and miraculously, nobody lost any limbs or anything from it. In any case, we all had decided to build the fortress within the volcanic mountain, mostly out of the sparse tree count and the access to magma. With two miners, a woodsdwarf, a mason, a farmer, a smithy dwarf, and our drunken wagondriver, we went right to work on it.
25th Spring, 6: The forging district's done, and the fortress is under some good progress at the moment with a farm readied. Adil did get first dibs on the dwarven beer though... we've kept telling him not to overdo it, but he just wouldn't listen... I hope he doesn't go overboard and pass out.
19th Malachite, 6: Migrants have arrived, although this wave was small... a speardwarf, a ranger, and a pair of fisherdwarves. It's a start I guess... population's up to 11 now, and the Trade Depot's ready, along with a well powered by an aquifer. For once, the Aquifer and I got along, as opposed to trying to dismantle each others' work.
4th Limestone, 6: The drunken wagondriver himself went to work on keeping a pretty good record, despite being the drunkard that invoked the wagon incident. The food stocks weren't too hot, but the dwarves were confident to reverse that mishap, and some gold toys were being made, primarily gold miniforges. If only miniforges actually worked to smelt actual iron... Either way though, the cats and dogs had 3 kittens and 3 puppies. More animals that'll come in handy!
3rd Timber, 6: More migrants had arrived, consisting of a third miner who had archery skills, an axedwarf, a pair of dwarven children, a second ranger, a bad brewer, a general craftsdwarf, a dyer, a keet, and peachick. The dwarves are beginning to worry the dwarven caravan's not coming to the fortress as winter draws near.
13th Timber, 6: The Liasion herself has come, along with a dwarven caravan. Immediately, the dwarves went to haul the gold toys and gems over to the depot, trading them for leather, cloth, glass, and food. Udil was ecstatic about the whole trade, but it was all Swordarmor could spare. The dwarven Liasion is being held by the drunkard whilst the fort was still under more development. An egg industry has been developed, although none of the eggs were traded due to a lack of them.
16th Moonstone: The garbage chewer's done, and all hooked up. The Liasion wanted 150% for the coke and iron bars, and various other things, but bituminous coal was the BIG screamer of 178% approximately. The export agreement was as follows:
Cheese for 127%
Crowns for 178%
Backpacks for 149%
Scepters for 134%
Ash for 120%
Footwear for 203%
Ammo for 176%
Leather waterskins for 206%
drinks for 198%
and large gems for 143%
By Adil's beard, what went wrong at the fortress to demand such things? The exports requested are definitely the necessities, except for the crafts. In any case, the liasion went on her way back to the fort.
16th obsidian: Thieves had begun their moves. A goblin thief jumped the captain, stabbing some teeth out of her mouth, and a bit of combat ensued. The goblin got away, but with an empty bag. A second goblin fled as soon as it got detected, and at the 25th, a kobold thief got found, and ran for the hills. Three thieves all foiled by a watchful eye. Not bad, military, but try to maim them next time.
End: Here's how the fort stands:
Population's at 19 dwarves, with nobody dorfed yet.
Contact with goblins and kobolds have been made, and confirmed
hostile.
Food stores:
42 meat
34 fish
53 plant
37 seeds
34 drink
83 other
Wealth: 63141

Other objects: 34740
Architecture: 12284

Hopefully, the fortress doesn't get ambushed or sieged on year two. On a side note, Adil will NOT go near a wagon, at risk of causing another wagon incident!
I apologize for the probably tattered dwarven fortress story, but I'm kinda a dabbling storyteller. Hope you enjoy SwordArmor, manned by The Oily Sword. Image showing might be a bit wonky regrettably, so there's that working against me.
