Twighlight-zoned migrants?
« on: August 20, 2012, 04:10:18 pm »

There are, according to my Dwarf Therapist, three dwarfs who are the happiest dwarfs in the land.  Each of them lists as being ecstatic!  Unfortunately none of them show up on my citizens list in [z], as if they never made it onto the map when they migrated in.  They are nowhere to be found on the map edges, so they're not stuck.

I can't change their job behavior in DT because they're listed as children (unless I cheat a little, which I did but it didn't affect anything).  And I can't locate them in-game to deal with them, I'm worried that I won't get any more migrants.

It's true that the rest of their bunch met with an unfortunate glass spike accident.  However I didn't notice these three at the time as existing at all, I was careful about burrows and all that. Could they have been babies in arms?

If they're Children, then they were probably abducted by Goblins - when they're taken from the map, they're removed from the snatcher's bag and given the final thought "is happy to be free" which instantly makes them ecstatic.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Yep looks like that's what happened.  Is it safe to ignore them then?  (Not much choice...)

I did get a new migrant wave so the stream if immigrants is not stuck.

I think there was a bug that sometimes babies could embark before they were actually born, but to be honest it really sounds like an abduction.

I wonder if, by some complicated arrangement involving webs and cage traps one might make a happiness machine that imprisons dwarves, who are subsequently released, much to their elation.

"All right Urist McGrumpypants, into the box-o-joy with you. You'll be a whole new dwarf when you come out."

Or does it not work like that?

The problem here isn't with the game, it's with Dwarf Therapist. Basically lots of utilities don't read the abducted children right, and will still say that they are in your fortress even though they aren't. It's the same reason why sometimes in Stonesense you will see random children sitting in the middle of nowhere even though there are none in your actual fortress. It's just leftover data from children that have been abducted, and can be safely ignored with no ill effects.

Hey, it's Dwarf Fortress. DF obeying the laws of reality would be like MacGyver using a hammer.

Wait, seriously? That's actually really deep, like we were really the oppressive ones all along...

Ahahah, I'm just joking, we're all just evil madmen here. I don't think that that was ever really in question.

It's like when dwarves are let out of cages; the babies are so glad to be out of the goblin's bag that they don't care that they're in a dark fortress.
What are the goblin keeping in there?

Well those bags tend to be made of troll fur...

Not all, though. What about the pig tail fiber bags? Obviously, there's something else they're keeping in their bags that is making them stink worse than a dark fortress full of goblins, trolls, demons, etc.

A Dark Fortress is a megaproject made entirely out of Obsidian, one of the dorfiest materials in existence. It's not that hard for dwarves to develop Stockholm Syndrome  ;D

I think the goblins are building pig tail fiber sweat shops that utilize Dwarf child labor.
