You are Namegiver.Some backstory
Your father had been a wizard, and you are his only child. You never knew your mother.
When you were young your father was an aspiring and well respected wizard at the grand magical university.
Your childhood wasn`t an easy one, altough your fathers rank allowed you to lead a life common men could only dream about. The other children at the university were jealous and shunned and insulted you.
During one incident a boy named Ralf told a lie about your father in order to hurt you; And you called him a Liar. Ralf the Liar, to be more specific. Surprisingly, the other people took up that nickname- Even the teachers, and his parents. And if anything he lied more and more instead of stopping it.
But there was something else, which was strange about that incident- No one else was near when you called him by that name. At that point you realized that there was something odd going on, and you became reluctant to call people by their names.
Once you reached the age of 15 your life became better, but just for a short time. Any wizard is expected to take apprentices- And your father obviously wanted you to follow him. He retired to his tower far away from the university and devoted his time to teaching you all there was to know about magic.
But, to your and his disappointment both, you seemed unable to perform even the most basic of spells. At first your father was patient, but later he grew more and more disappointed. He tried everything- He even allowed you to dabble in necromancy, the forbidden art, if that would suit you. But it didn`t.
During one of your studies you stumbled over a book called "The exotic arts", which was written by a certain Eliphas the ignorant. In it a shool of magic used by backwards barbarians was mentioned- Appellomancy, the art of naming things. To quote the small footnote:
"No one is sure whether Appellomancy even exists. Some people believe that appellomancers are able to change the nature of things by simply giving them a new name. This belief is held by certain people in remote corners of the world. I have lived amongst one of those tribes for some time and i can certify that appellomancy doesn`t seem to exist. From time to time a so called appellomancer would visit the tribe and the unnamed youths of the tribe would come forth in order to receive their name. During this naming rituals i could sense no trace of magic and the young ones didn`t even get a new name, as far as i can tell, and seemed to keep their old one. Appellomancy seems to be nothing more than a myth held by unlearned barbarians."
You never knew why, but you commited this note to your memory. Only a few years later did it come in handy.
Being sorely disappointed in your lack of skill your father gathered new apprentices around him. Shortly after their arrival you mistook one of them for another and called him by the name of Tybault, even though he was named Damion. To your surprise he reacted to that name and the others joined in in calling him Tybault, even your father did.
At that moment you realized that you were an Appellomancer. You never told your father, or anyone else, though, instead focusing your mind on gathering more information about that strange power.
You soon realized that there were various rules and limitations that you had to obey:
1. You can only name a person once.
2. Once you name a person everyone will think that this is the real name of the person, including the renamed person itself. You are an exception, of course.
3. The written word is an exception, too. If someones name is written down somewhere the written word won`t be changed. (But everyone else still believes in the new name, which might cause some confusion when official letters are concerned..)
4. As your powers grow so does the effect the names have on the named person.
5. Your naming powers aren`t just able to alter the behavior of a person, but can alter their body as well. This is harder, though, and in order to drastically affect ones body you will have to become much more powerful.
6. You can name objects. For example, a razor you named "Eversharp", remained sharp ever afterwards and didn`t require any sharpening anymore. The naming of towns or big places still seems to be impossible for you, though.
7. At the moment you are only able to give persons simple names like Rik the Sick or Damion foolhardy.
8. You must utter the name in an audible manner, too, and the person/object in question must be near you. In the case of a person you must actually address that person with that name.
After learning the basics you decided to leave your fathers wizard tower. That day you renamed yourself- From now on you would be called
Namegiver. Carrying this name seemed to improve your grasp on Appellomancy immensely.
After months of travelling around the so called Empire you arrive in a small town called
Bagrah. It was once a simple outpost, in the days when the empire started to rise, but over the years settlers had arrived and now it is bustling with life. There`s even a wizards guildhall present.
