It will just pick random food stuff from a reasonably close food stockpile.

There are three different types of food to be cooked:

Easy meal will use two ingredients and will result in biscuits.
Fine meal uses three ingredients and will result in stew.
Lavish meal uses four ingredients and will result in roasts.

Make a refuse stockpile outside your fortress. The dwarves will bring any dead animal remains to the refuse stockpile.

Bodies outside your fortress are normally neglected. You could change that in the orders menu (o-r-o, I believe), but be careful: They will start to collect dead animals anywhere on the map.

To prevent your grazing animals from starving to death, put them in a pasture outside on grass. For Yaks it should be large.
Also, if you notice any hungry animals (blinking brown down arrow) and don't have an opportunity to pasture them, it's best to butcher them right away. At least you will gain lots of meat, tallow,  bones, and a hide.

And this is what I love about these forums... People will help out no snobbishness or putting down... I remember when minecraft forums used to be like this...

I've found that taking a pair of breeding livestock has served me well in many games.
If you know you will have grass to put a pasture on then sheep are good, providing wool, milk and meat. If you don't then get pigs, which don't need pasture and provide milk and meat.

The two free beasts-of-burden you get with your wagon can also be used, as long as they are the same species and different genders.

We just need to get Toady to embed a Lisp interpreter into DF.  Learning lambda calculus in order to play the game wouldn't make DF's learning curve much steeper.

I really recommend only taking one mechanic, so one miner can be a straight miner.

Fish are so scarce, embarking with any fishery skills is pretty useless.

I remember brewers at least used to contribute some sort of quality to booze, to the point where dwarves would have happier thoughts from better booze. Can anyone confirm that's still true? If so, I recommend having only one brewer - a single dedicated brewer can supply a whole fort. But training planters is no problem - you'll have so many seeds after a few years you won't have any problem, and that's about when you would need to have your farmer/brewer start brewing exclusively.

Then you can embark with a mating pair (or two, for safety's sake) of dogs. Dogs are pretty useful creatures - they don't eat, they can be trained and follow military around for protection, and they don't lead to tantrum spirals unless they're pets. You can eat 'em, too.

If you're taking rope or cloth, take cave spider silk, because it's cheaper than plants.

Have you assigned them to the pasture?

If so, then there probably is some problem with stairs or ramps. Or maybe you have a burrow acrivated? Civilian alert?
