I feel your pain.  Vampires always go for your best dwarves :(.  This is why I screen all new migrants with the thirst test.  When placed in a temporary migrant squad and given a station order, they eventually get thirsty, unless they're vamps.

That is genius. I'm gonna start doing that.
Indeed.

Honestly I'd think Vampires would want to kill someone sleeping alone and not in a bunker if they could help it.

As with many things, they would if they weren't not programmed to do that.
EDIT: Yet.

Seriously, who would want to fight off Dracula ? Okay, I lost a good Mason to him (err, her), but believe me, he is still making up for it. Actually she will be, forever. And after that, too.

If you think you have a problem when you found a vampire, you simply did not recognize he/she is a solution to a problem you just did not meet.

Oh yeah, you did not meet YET  ;D

Yes hanni there is merit to using a vampire to your own advantage and simply weathering the issue of it killing off your dwarves, some of which would take years to replace.

But this thread is more or less about handling vampires more intelligently and for there to be less logical barriers in removing them if you so chose.

I'm one of those silly players who actually tries to keep their dorfs alive, and armed, so having no immediate repercussions for attacking a military dorf, especially one of legendary caliber, kind of pisses me off.

Maybe skilled fighters are better at waking up and grabbing their sword when a vampire is centimeters away from their neck?

I think vamps should require blood period.  The sleeping piece is definitly rooted in the Dracula novel and would make getting blood easier, but they should have to drink and shouldn't have to drink only their own races blood.  I suppose that with very good arguement you could say only sentient's blood is edible to vamps, but any blood should do.  And, so far as I know, they could be programmed to pretend to sleep by going to their quarters regularly and while the original Dracula refrained from food and drink, they never(I think) said that he couldn't ingest it or that he would feel and real ill-effects from it.

As far as detecting vamps.... in the novel all his victims craved his touch, it was better than sex for them.  Why?  IDK.  And a dorf sleeping in the barracks should be pretty used to the sounds of mummers, metal lanking, bows twanging, and doors opening.
