New kind of danger room and the experience of falling dwarves
« on: August 19, 2012, 10:36:57 am »

I had a theory that i could train armor user skill by dropping dwarves so i did some !!SCIENCE!! of droping armored dwarves a z level and the data i gathered is weird. The experiment was carried out in a room that had its floor replaced by a retracting drawbridge on what they had a station order. I dropped them ten times.

Right now i have two theories. First is that i am bad with !!SCIENCE!! and the other is that Dwarf Fortress is even weirder than i thought. Morre testing will be done as soon i have time.

There might be something to this.

My current fort has a dodge-me trap for goblins that goes 4 Z-levels down onto a set of spikes (some tiles fixed and some on a repeater lever.)  I keep noticing "standard" goblins going into it and transforming into master level goblins from the fall and initial spiking.  The combat logs even show the title change - crossbow goblin to hammer lord.

I haven't started dropping recruits into it yet since the goblins become masters, but also accumulate multiple broken bones and various cuts from the experience as well.

It makes sense, in a way... part of it, at least. I could see it raising armor, but most of that surprises me. Especially the freak -2k shield xp - I have no idea what happened there.

Really, though... What is the advantage of dropping dwarves as opposed to danger rooming them?

What are the combat logs like? It looks like the game is counting the impact as an attack and the dwarves are launching counterstrikes against the floor.

And the poor armor results are because the dwarves are preventing their landings with their weapons most of the time, occasionally their shields, and their armor last. Even then, you're only gaining XP for those body parts that land first and only for whatever piece of armor deadens the impact.

Dodge gain?

Sorry Son, I don't think you can quite dodge gravity yet. ;D

And indeed, as Ubiq said it seems they're blocking the ground with their weapons, so remove the weapons and they'll probably try to use their shield instead.

I suspect that the drop in XP of shield user and other skills is due to brain damage, because you dropped them dozens of feet onto hard stone floor.

So skilled...or so stupid?
Dwarves probably qualify as both.

They're too stupid to know they shouldn't be that skilled.

...Although, Thief's right, that does make sense. If Fighter can use his skill to cancel the force of a giant monster's fist meeting his sword, then he should be able to use his skill to cancel the force of the ground meeting his sword.

The planet is a LOT bigger than a monster's fist.

But it isn't the planet that has momentum, it's Fighter. Ergo, size doesn't matter except as it affects gravity's pull.

Planet, monster fist... both of them should have enough force to move an object that weighs 250lb, but they don't.

My theory was that since armor can protect from fall damage falling should increase armor skills but these results are just plain weird.
This time i dropped them five times but i suspect that some of them cheated and fell less. The small increases in social skills can be explained by the small time they spend idling between falling and bridge being reset.
