23a military question
« on: August 19, 2012, 08:34:31 am »

im playing the old version 23a and after a good few hours of messing with the military screen figured out how to group and arm my dorfs but when i go to the squads screen i only see the station option, how do you issue attack orders?
PS: Could anyone tell me what the writing above your username means eg; bay watcher; escaped lunatic?

I'd advise stationing your squad near the enemies.
Escaped lunatics are newer than bay watchers, i.e. have made fewer posts.

There are no attack orders in 23a, only station and patrol orders.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Correct - the current military interface was introduced in version 0.31.01.

[edit]

If you're going to play version 0.23.130.23a, you should probably first familiarize yourself with version 0.28.181.40d - no squad orders, no military uniforms, no health care, only 3 attributes (Strength, Agility, Toughness), no skill rust, no burrows (just "outside" and "inside"), no caverns (just underground rivers/pools, chasms/pits, magma pools/pipes, and HFS), and no forgotten beasts or titans (aside from the "Titan" megabeast, which is just a slightly stronger version of the Giant/Cyclops/Ettin).

The differences between 0.31+ and 0.23.130.23a are massive, but taking a brief stop at 40d will make the final step to 23a somewhat less overwhelming. If you haven't yet read the History of Dwarf Fortress article on the wiki, do so as soon as possible.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
