Galaxy 55
« on: August 18, 2012, 11:00:23 pm »

Some new competition in the minecraft meets space travel genre.

http://galaxy55.com/home

Looks pretty cool. The space part is in 2D, while the planets are generated minecraft style but wrap around so they make complete little worlds.

Just popping in to make note of my observations:
The strange fruit like objects that glow when up in the trees, are a source of power for your laser. They let you mop up organics.
The blue glowing rocks provide crystals that let you pick up other rocks.
And lastly, the green crystal things. I have no clue what they do.
Oh, and for the love of god if you find some source cascade(looks like really see-through ice) don't pick it up unless you wanna deal with it taking over a large area the moment you put it down.
I will edit this to provide more information later.

Reminds me of what starbound is to terraria.

Actually I'm kinda surprised no big publishers have tried to rip off minecraft yet.

Not to say galaxy 55 is a rip off, its legitimate.

I like the idea, lets just see how it turns out.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Yeah, the controls pissed me off a bit. I like the little wrap around worlds though and I hope that they go for something like that in Blockade runner.

So...am I missing something, or am I not able to do much of anything? The only blocks apart from ones attached to my ship that I can remove seem to be moon dirt. Do I need to upgrade my drill, or something?

Okay, the forums make it seem like I'm missing something. I'll try looking at some other planets.

my feelings too. I'm holding cubes of woods, while other talks about toughened glasses and scanning ships and planets and stuff

nevermind. it's because of not being registered.

Yeah, it could definitely be improved by not being subject to all the annoying flash stupidity.

The forum system is certainly something I've never seen before. I guess it is an attempt to re-imagine how a forum can work, but there's a reason forums all work the same...

the controls are annoing.

to craft, you need to register and then on your ship you place blocks on the yellowish floor, then the result appears on the strange block on the left. you have to activate it, with empty hands, or it won't work.

they have a wiki, it's not really evident from the main page, I've found the link on the forums:
http://galaxy55wiki.com/wiki/Laser

Annoying controls like this are common among these french guys' games. I don't know why they do it, but last block game they made. They did the same thing.

I checked out the list of games these guys have made in the past. Die2Nite suprised me, I remember people here liking it, although I never played it. Weird to have more than one block game. The snake clone was very weird too.

I'm starting to get real bored of cubes.

Play Ecstatica, everything in it is made out of spheroids.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

interesting fact: cubes on top will be larger than those deep below.

Will they? My guess is it's just a visual effect, much like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaFzAtF5mRk
