Ever notice how the dwarves resemble the roman legion?
« on: August 18, 2012, 12:07:13 am »

Think about it: Your standard legionare was short, stout, and well fit. He fought with a thick shield, as much armour as he could wear, and a short sword. He was practically covered in digging tools. His standard ration included alchohol. The only thing they do that dwarven militia units do not, is fight in an orderly fashion.

I don't know what kind of standards you hold your militias up to, but mine are in most cases nothing more than a pathetic handful of angry, partially equipped drunks with an IQ equal to that of the common cabbage. Not exactly the image that comes to mind when I think of the Roman legionnaire.

You partially equip your militia?!?

I just draft everyone into the army and send them out en-masse with nothing but their fists and hands. The lucky few legendaries are the only ones that get to grab up any goblinite they can find, most of them just have to make do with the clothes they came in. Only those that are strong enough and lucky enough to live in my fortress survive.

(On an unrelated side-note, my doctors are extremely well trained. :P)

Barbarians, the two of you!

Only the best dwarves get drafted into my army. If they can't carry a sword three times their own size and do a somersault off a ten story watchtower before military training, they get hauling pump duty until they can!

(On an unrelated note, my farmer, being a retired soldier like all my other non-pumpers, is so powerful he can rip the head off a dragon. Twice. He actually had a statue built in his honor from the bones of both dragons, just so the men with skinny arms can question the purpose of their lives before they rise from the depths and receive proper training)

I haven't built an army yet. So far, my planning in the case of an invasion has been "Lock the doors and hope the 80-something baby chicks running around devour the threat"

I've gotten lucky enough to have one of my armies of 20 dwarves fully outfitted in cotton candy. The vein was massive and supplied my fortress with so much bluestone that I didn't even care that all my military dwarves were getting cotton candy stitches. The fortress was built into a ravine I  covered and dug the ramps out of so that the Gobbos would be funneled in. It worked surprisingly well, and I did imagine my Dwarves very much like the Legion when they would stand in the ravine waiting for the Goblins to fall upon them, only to watch the horde get cut to pieces, especially when my marksdwarves appeared within the hollowed, fortificated mountainsides on their flanks.

I use the LFR mod frequently and love warring with the Nephilim just so I can get mad amounts of their weapons and armor.

On another note, what weapons do you guys outfit your dwarves with most? I lean heavily towards swords with a good bit of spears, with a small fraction of warhammers for support.

Short swords, and battle axes, with a mixed squad of lash and spear for use against cavern dwellers.

Whatever weapon skill a dwarf has is the weapon they get. If they don't have a weapon skill, then they get whatever the hell I have laying around.

A bone helm, a bone crossbow with a handful of bone bolts and a kitten leather cloak is all my recruits get. They do usually get to fire from inside fortifications at gobs crossing a very narrow bridge over a very deadly pit however. They have one chance to hold the line and save themselves and their kin, little buggers rarely fail. The real army is usually dealing with threats from the caverns where I've over expended.

As they aren't an actual legion, I would say they go more towards Sparta. From the makers of 300 comes 200: The dwarven side.

Not to mention most of my fortresses have spartan living conditions. Quality tables? You get whatever Urist Mcrandom makes out of these rocks, which usually resembles a rock with the top flattened down. It holds food. Eat off of it.

For the fortresses' tenth anniversary, they get chairs. And by chairs I mean rocks that you can sit on. I've also found that productivity rises when the fortress has no beds. Why waste time going to your bedroom when you can sleep in the workshop?

I'm still in the "honeymoon" stage of Dwarf Fortressing where I still believe the lives of all my dwarves are valuable. However, I've only recently gotten a fort to last long enough for me to get besieged by a group of goblins and their demon king, and the value of dwarven lives did drop a little bit in my mind.

I also still treat them all to 2x2 bedrooms with a bed and chest or cabinet and smoothed walls, and take care of all my nobles. I know I'm playing this wrong.

I'd like to quote Joseph Devreaux on this.

Bah! 2x2? In my fort, we had to make do with 2x1 bedrooms! And we were lucky if we got a chalk coffer that made our hands white and filled that crappy room every time we wanted to get out the old cutting axe! Not like those poor saps in two B, who only got SACKS. MADE OUT OF PIG TAILS.

I think I've managed to create my own brand of army.
Everyone gets Royal Bedrooms constructed above ground out of flux stone blocks, fully furnished with masterwork statues, armor/weapon racks, tables, chairs, coffers and cabinets.
Everyone in the fort is recruited into the full time military, becomes a mason and/or a farmer while off duty, with specialists being designated as needed. There are exceptions and specialists in and out of the military, for example the few auxiliary farmers who ensure that there are always some off duty farmers to keep the army fed and boozed, the miners who dig the entrenchments and of course wield the finest picks to battle, the professional battle miners who train all year with pick and sword, the Were-creature squad that trains with morningstar and dagger, the elite guards who regularly fight the ambushers who roam the corridors, the rangers who roam the wilderness fighting ravens...
As food goes, there are few roasts and biscuits, with the variety to many types of alcohol, meats and plants to keep a healthy diet up, albeit a bit bland.
All are equipped with the best weapons available, which fluctuates between full steel/candy to simple copper and silver.
Essentially the best of a Roman, Spartan, Utopian, Barbarian and Medieval army.

(pics or it didn't happen)
I'll second this.
The only way you can rip someone's head off with your bare hands in game is if you pinch their head while having a massive size + strength advantage -which i doubt even the most legendary of dwarves has on a dragon.

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...
It should be pretty fun though.
