Hyrule: Total War, A Legend of Zelda RTS
« on: August 17, 2012, 07:25:57 pm »

I haven't played much of this game, but I have to say most of the promotional content and gameplay videos i've seen are rather impressive.

The intro cinematic

Trailer 1

Trailer 2

Gameplay (Twili Forces V Lizalfos)

Gameplay (Wizzrobe Order & Labrynna Regime V Darknut Legion & Stalfos Horde)

It's free, if that's any incentive. At this point it sounds more like an indie game, but it might be a mod for medieval II

That is blatantly a mod for a Medieval 2, it even states this explicitly in some of those videos.  How have you played it without knowing this?

Looks like a lot more's been added since I last looked in on the project, though I'm not too interested in playing it. The whole premise seems kind of silly.

I've been looking at this as well. You need Medieval II Kingdoms: Total War (or whatever order that goes in) to run it. Currently installing the game, trying to get more information before I commit to the mod. I DO like the look of it, though it's a shame that you can only play around eight races in the Campaign.

This strikes me as a little silly. I am in no way an expert in Zelda lore but I don't believe there was any really massive wars between factions. It seems like they just took well-known characters from the game and modeled them into Total War to mindlessly fight against each other.
That's not to say that it's bad in anyway, those models look good and the gameplay might be solid. Just still seems silly.

I think it's an alternate universe sort of thing. No more silly than the comic books where all the superheros suddenly start killing each other.

Well there had to be wars, Ganondorf kept invading the castle to grab Zelda, not like she walked right into his arms.

Haven't you played Twilight Princess? Hyrulian soldiers in the games are utterly useless, either dying like flies or surrendering like a stereotypical French man. Usually the latter.

... surrendering like Napoleon? That, uh. Gannondorf is a walking Waterloo? Or just the... crap. Pig dudes. Moblins, there we go. Moblins are ambulatory waterloos for hyrulian soldiers.

No, not Napoleon. Napoleon could at least give Ganondorf pause.

French people are often (and incorrectly) stereotyped as being cowards who will surrender at the drop of a hat. Something to do with how quickly Paris fell in WWII, if I remember correctly.

Ah, you deadpan to my deadpan. Fair enough. Nice how th'underground gets just kinda' shoved under the rug with that stereotype, yeah, etc., etc., etc.

Anyway, Waterloo moblins amuse me more than "French" hyrulians, so I'mma go wit' dat.

Hey, I said I didn't agree with the stereotype. :P

It does, however, fit the canon Hyrulian soldiers. Which is why I assume this mod takes place in an alternate, more GrimDark version of Hyrule.

I think it's an alternate universe sort of thing. No more silly than the comic books where all the superheros suddenly start killing each other.

Basically.

The game has a structured campaign, and takes a much, MUCH more grimdark look at the legend of zelda universe. Also, no one faction is seen as evil, even the church of majora has a somewhat noble reason for existing, and even the kingdom of hyrule has a moneygrabbing bastard downside.
