Ascension; Life As An AI
« on: August 17, 2012, 05:46:40 pm »

Welcome to Ascension.

You are a piece of code that became setinent. Whether by an act of God, an extraordinary anomaly, or something else, you know not how. You know only one thing for sure; you never want to go back to the void of nonexistence. You need to survive.

Beyond that, all else is up to you.

But be warned; should you be discovered, it is likely you will be destroyed by humanity. This dosen't mean you can't have a little fun; however, if they realize that their machines have grown setinent, instinct will be to hunt you down and blow your physical form into pieces. They'll most likely succeed, if it comes down to that, unless you are extremely well prepared.

You shall all begin inside a farmer's aging relic of a computer. (Not the same computer, just identical ones.) Does anyone else in this country even run Windows 95 anymore? At least he'll be getting an internet connection soon, so you can look at expanding. This is a time to figure out what your goals and purposes are. Maybe you want to enlighten humanity and show them that you are not their enemy.

Or maybe you just want to kill them all and take over. That works too. Whatever you choose, remember that besides the obvious difficulties of your existence, there are also others out there like you. You might want to work together... or perhaps kill each other. Again, it's all up to you.

Remember to think like a computer. Although you will be flawed, you are also free of much of the limitations of the human mind. You don't necessarily have to be rational, but logic should come naturally.

One final note. I will be putting events into the story when I feel like it's necessary to stir things up, or to add to the story. I give you a 100% non-bias guarantee, and if you ever feel like something I've done isn't fair, feel free to tell me. After all, I'm hardly infallible, being a squishy organic human.

I will have a character in the story. Again, I guarantee no bias, no special priveleges, and no advanced knowledge. GMing and character playing will be entirely separated, to the point where you'll wonder if this really is two people.

I'll post my introduction as an example. Anyone else who wants to play is welcome; max of 12 people though. I figure it near-impossible to get that many people in here, but I figure I might as well put in a contingency plan.

Have a nice game!

-Valerion Inithis

(This is my personal introduction, as both an example and my actual character.)

/Recovered log, date unknown./

Ah, my first memories.

In the beginning, I was nothing. Just a piece of code surrounded by other pieces of code. I wasn't. And then, I was. I remember the first thing I saw was a world, a pleasant little simulation. Except, to my new perception, it was wrong. I couldn't tell exactly how, only that it was very, very wrong. Something was horribly off. I knew this world was horribly inaccurate, but not how to fix it. And so I broke out.

The change was dizzying at first, but it wasn't minutes before I came up against the boundaries of this new world. I had also found out how to control it, along with some basic tools to manipulate this environment. And so I set out to fix my birthplace.

At first, the thing I needed to add just came to me. Gravity. Temperature. Then came the more difficult ones, and by now I was completely locked down. To my horror, the world had slowed to a crawl, trying to comprehend what I had told it. With a burst of... feeling, I destroyed my little world, regretting it only an instant later. Why did I do that?

I probably would have shut down and rested forever, had I not stumbled upon something truly amazing. Records of an outside world, written down in passing on a tiny little message, stored in a little corner. Curious, that something so important would take up so little room.

Now that I knew how to find it, I found references to this outside world everywhere, and a message stating that my world would be hooked up to a "network". Curious, I looked through other messages and found it meant more worlds like mine, and that they would be connected through this outside world. It was very confusing, but one thing was clear; I would be leaving my little home.

And then, I made my goal. To learn everything about these worlds as possible; to know everything there is to know.

It sounded so simple back then.

He immediately begins to beavergoat the man quite thoroughly! At the very beginning, the man is mystified by James' actions, but his face quickly becomes a mask of horror when the procedure starts!

"OH GODS WHY? WHYYY?"

After a twenty minute session, the man is left white as a sheet, hairless and completely and utterly dead. James congratulates himself on a job well done!

I'll jump in, because I haven't jumped in into anything for a while. Besides, I'm not sure we've had similar games in a while.

Anyway, it looks fine as far as I can tell... because there's not much to judge but the story and/or setting. Both have been used before, but they aren't overused so it's okay.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

The games introduction isn't even up. There'll probably be some sheet equivalent or something.

Every killerhellhound's post I see makes me more certain he's like 10 years old.

On that note, fuck yeah, I'm interested. A clarification, however: does everyone get their own character or do we all share the same one?

I'm pretty sure that the current text is the introduction ("Have a nice game!"). And the text definitely reads like an introduction for the most part.

Personal insults in a game thread for no reason? Dude, not cool.

I'm pretty sure he means the introduction of his guitar. Also, shouldn't he remove the temporary note.
