[VLP] Fallout: New Vegas (Blind, Hardcore Delivery Boy!)
« on: August 17, 2012, 05:24:35 pm »

Henceforth I shall be playing the game known as Fallout: New Vegas...but I'm playing it with a slight twist.  I'm going to try out the Hardcore mode, but I'm also playing it Blind and for the first time.  I have a lot of experience with the older Fallout games so I'm not too worried about struggling in terms of difficulty/the system, but for the plot I have no real idea where I'm going or what is the most optimal path in which to do things.  This ought to be fun for me at least!

Blind Hardcore.. Mmm.. Have a cookie.

Make it an Ironman, and you can have my firstborn, once he's there.

Don't. You'll be dying quite a bit, at least in the start, and ending the lp because of it wouldn't be fun.

Edit: What policy do you want on spoilers, recommendations for the character actions, mechanical information, and etc?

Edit2: Oh, dear nuclear god, look around. No really, on the second well you simply didn't looked over your shoulder, missed the woman screaming for help until you got back. Also, remember you walker more slowly with a two handed weapon on hands. Hold R and put it on your back when not using it.

Also, the video seems to have you lagging quite a bit. This might make it quite hard for you in later moments of the game.

Edit3: Oh, right, remember F changes first person to third person and vice versa. It makes it a bit easier to return to first person if you accidentally hit the mouse wheel.

Having not played Fallout 3 in years, the controls have all slipped out of my head and I don't think I'll be playing Iron Man unless I do well in the early game.  I'd prefer no spoilers as I really do want to do this completely blind, it's one of the few games I haven't been spoiled for.  Mechanical information I don't mind too much, if it's things like 'that weapon you just picked up is completely bugged' or 'you're forgetting that x key does y action'.  And yes, I'm often good at getting distracted and annoyed and missing the obvious, although I'm quite certain that those geckos and the lady were well out of their position, which didn't help.  Playing Blind is not always as easy as it sounds, especially when you have the pressure of people watching.  Enjoy or suffer.  :P

Thanks for the controls tips, those were things I had forgotten.  My lag seems okay in-game, usually around 30-40fps in crowded environments by my tracker with recording on.  I have no worries as due to my computer being an old piece of crap, I'm very used to dealing with that level of fps.

I've finished the next episode, either way.  Don't worry, I'm still stumbling around blindly while I get my bearings and have a summer cold to boot.  ;P

Well, I'm off to watch episode 2, but before that some mechanical considerations to put to writing:

Remember there are two number for damages, one is the damage per shot and the other is the dps (which assumes fire at max rate, all hitting). For weapon skills: The most well rounded option is definitely guns, although you might want to put some points in melee or unarmed (I recommend melee if you want the cowboy perk) for when enemies get too close or ammo starts to run low (which wouldn't be really a concern in a non-hardcore play through after the first few hours of the game, as one would have found more ammo than they could possibly use in a long time) and explosives (because explosives are freaking awesome if not entirely feasible to base oneself entirely on). Energy weapons are also a possibility but as you might have noticed they are a bit rarer than slug throwers.

Secondly, unlike fallout 3, DR plays a very small part in New Vegas (IIRC there are maybe two items that use DR in a unmodded FNV). Instead DT is used, which gives you a flat reduction in damage instead of the percentage of DR. Sometimes when taking or dealing damage you might noticed a whole shield or a broken shield. A whole shield means the damage is lower than the DT of whatever is taking damage (be it yourself or your enemy) and it will only deal minimal damage (it will be above 0 though). A broken shield on the other hand means the DT reduction of your weapon/ammo is above the DT of target, which means you might want to consider using another ammo type depending on the circumstances.

Third and last, unless you use mods you can only have a single follower with you at a time, no matter what your charisma is. Charisma gives bonuses to the power of followers instead (don't quite recall the exact numbers though).

Oh, right, there's that as well.

Yeah, you can have two followers, but some followers fit one slot and others fit the other, and that's it, you can't have one follower in the slot of the other kind of follower.

(tried to keep that as spoiler free as I could :P)

Period of sickness and RL stuff left me thinking about everything BUT this LP.  I'm back on the case though.  This was recorded a couple weeks ago so I'm still a bit sniffly, but starting ep4 the sound quality will get considerably better (and the episodes a bit shorter and more manageable to upload).

Episode 3:

I'm starting to get to grips with the UI and remember how to play a bit better, confidence is returning (which is a definite boost).  I have no plans to play Iron Man yet but if I get a decent way in it'll certainly be tempting.  I'll probably just stick with a traditional approach, though.  Still keep forgetting I have to hold the button to holster a weapon mid-game though, but I'll get there sooner or later.
