((Firefly reference ftw. :P))

Troy scratched his chin and looked back at the caravan master.

"Does that sound about right to you? What about that negotiation job? What are the details on that?"

"I'm in for any of these jobs." Ethan said calmly, arms crossed behind his head and working as a support for it as he acted like a six feet tall cat - laidback and nonchalant, but always ready to show his claws.

He freed one of his hands, taking his gun from the holster and spinning the cylinder of his revolver once to check the shells. "Nice to have some spare ammo for a change. Nasty buggers kept trying to get in my way..."

Troy's eyes widened for a moment as Ethan made a statement about having ammunition, having remembered something pretty important. He turned to Rain, pulling out the spent casings for the 10 mil bullets.

"I just remembered, Rain, can you make these into proper bullets again?"

Kat flipped over on her stomach, facing Ethan, small hands propping up her delicate chin.

"You know, we can't all lie down on the job, Ethan. Aren't you supposed to patrolling in the dark alone, looking for 8 ft tall mutants with sharp teeth and glowing eyes, or something? Make yourself useful, lazy-man. One of them could snatch poor Paprika into the darkness and eat her for a late night snack, right now, at this very moment-and you'd not even be able get up in time, would you?" She said, smiling slightly.

Then she rolled back to the opposite side of the log he was leaning against, copying his resting stance more or less perfectly-a lighter cat, but no less nonchalant.

((Actually, Ethan is resting his back against a dead tree's log.))

"Actually, if she strays far from the group and decides to be eaten by some mutant out there, it ain't my fault. Can't protect people who want to be killed." Ethan answered simply, still sitting lazily with his back against the log.

"Hey, I can take care of myself against a mutant, you know. Don't underestimate me! I'm probably the best at wandering off alone and still being alive come morning."

Paprika sits down next to Ethan. She taps her chin with a finger thoughtfully, and adds,"By 'take care of,' I don't necessarily mean 'kill.'"

Kat continued.

"Paprika, I believe Ethan is alluding to your probable future consumption being, by and of itself, a matter out of his hands. One wonders, in the matter in question, if it is just a measure of how comfortable a spot he's sitting in, at that moment-or a potential long term relationship problem, that reveals some sort of undermining trust issues..." Kat said, smiling to herself.

Paprika shrugs.

"Maybe it's pragmatism. I like that. I mean, why would you risk never finding that just-right spot again if you get up to find someone who might have already been eaten?" She nods sagely. "Comfty spots are only inferior to a warm blacket on a cold winter day."

Kat was laying downwind by the fire, taking a break, hands behind her head. She heard Troys question, offering some knowledge

"Me and Rain once tried to shortcut through a little town called 'Defiance'.

Troy scratched his chin and looked back at the caravan master.

"Does that sound about right to you?"

The Caravan master listened to Kat's story with a furrowed brow, gently stroking the whispy green hairs that grew from his chin.  It took Troy's question to stir him from his stupor.  "Well, couple differences... one thing is you aren't gonna find any mutants if you take the job  at Thee Corners, that's what they call the place.  Don't even mention mutants.  Damn freaks there kill mutants on sight and don't like anybody who associate with my kind.  But you all shouldn't have a problem with that if you keep your mouths shut.  Second thing is these gangs are a bit bigger and better equipped then Defiance used to be like.  The smaller gangs all got organized into the big three to survive but the absorbing is a bit funny.  The gangs have a bunch of different crews that don't always get along.  Some of them are well equipped, others not so much.  So it's a real patchwork but there's this sort of balance of power.  Too bad all three sides in this balance of power want anybody affiliated with me out."

"What about that negotiation job? What are the details on that?"[/color]

The mutant leaned way back in his sitting position upon an old decaying log and sighed at Troy's next question.  "Well I'll tell you this but it comes on a condition.  This is secret, you go blabbing about it and you'll piss me off something fierce.  I wouldn't recommend that, New Langley is the only decently organized patch of territory round these parts and you'll probably be wanting to do business with us again.  So keep your damn traps shut on this one whether you take the job or not.  Understood."  The mutants blind eyes stare at Troy until he gets agreement. ((presumably, if not, don't read the spoiler.))

"I just remembered, Rain, can you make these into proper bullets again?"

"Bullets?  Bullets are easy to make.  But I need gunpowder and don't have the chemicals for that right now."

Troy agreed and listened to the mutant talk about the two gangs. He blinked in suprise at the job description.

"You certainly don't mess around... I think that if we take another job, it should be something other than trying to get 2 powerful gangs to fight each other. That sounds like a bit more than what we can handle. The library job, I think we can sneak in and out without getting too much, if any, attention from the gangs that hang around there so it's safer by far.

What do you guys think? Should we take one of these? I'm fine with whatever the ladies go with, that's my job after all, but I just think that making a gangwar is going to be pretty dangerous."

"A gangwar would probably need us to use the clothing of one group to attack members of the other, but the library seems easier." Ethan spun the cylinder of his revolver once more and sighed.

"Any is fine with me, to be sincere."

"You certainly don't mess around..."
The mutant gives a dismissive grunt before replying.
"It's a brutal fucking world, these punks kill good people and it wouldn't be half what they deserve."
Rain quietly chimes in with an opinion spoken in a soft, almost reverant voice.
"Sometimes, Troy, it's civilization versus destruction.  They'll never going to stop the killing so we have no choice.  You just have to wipe them out... burn them to the ground until they can't hurt people anymore... for some death is too fucking kind!"  Rain stares at Troy in an almost accusing fashion and she spites out the hate filled words.  There is an momentary pause before the blind mutant replies with a smile...
"I like the way you think, girl.  But if your friends would rather keep their hands clean it's fine with me."

Troy stared back at Rain without a mote of suprise or hostility, he just matched her angry gaze with a look that had something in the back of his eyes. Something... dead.

"I never said I was above doing such things. If you really want to go around slitting the throats of each and everyone of those gang members, fuck I'll hold them down and give you a rusty knife to do the job with if you want me to. I can tell you now, I've done a lot worse in my time, a lot worse.

All I'm saying is that doing things like starting gang wars between two powerful and well armed gangs is dangerous, more than you might realise, and it's my job to keep you safe and let you know the risks to the best of my knowledge. If you want to do the job, then I won't argue with you and I'll follow you into the mouth of hell itself to get the job done, but I wouldn't take the job lightly either. It's your choice."

"Hey, girl, sockman is right." Ethan said, staring at Rain. "I particularly don't care about any job and he was just trying to point out things may get dangerous. More dangerous for you, even."

He tapped his thick leather jacket and the chest underneath, as if to show they were different.
"In case you haven't noticed, well-armed thugs are more likely to kill you than the opposite happening. This mission is more dangerous for you and Kat than for the rest of us."

"No one lives forever..."
"Well this here is a lovely chat." observes the mutant. "But as I understand it you lot aren't eager to go tangling with the plasmas and the bloods.  I'll warn you though, you head into Three Corners and they won't be push overs either.  You want easy work then you are talking to the wrong mutant.  But if you bring me back good books from before the war I'll pay you what they're worth.
"Now I don't know all that much about what lies in wait for you at Three Corners.  I know there are three gangs, the Sicilians, the 77s and the sewer rats.  There's a lot of different crews, some more aggressive then others.  I don't know which gang controls the library but apparently the town is divided into 'blocks' and the library is at a block called '12th and Park Street'.  The gangs must know what that means.  You guys feel up for this."
