Holy shit this thread got real interesting real fast.

I can't even keep up with it

Not that it matters since my only arguement is that people are illogical and that people keep trying to argue aganst illogic with logic... which never works.

But people are also crazy as hell. And will keep doing the same thing over and over as a result.

I just googled that phrase and found nothing. Congratulations, those three words in that order have never been typed into the googleable internet before! Until now.

Yup. Sadly people doing the same thing over and over is just another symptom of a lack of critical thinking and inability to live in reality.

I like how some of the same people arguing that not all Christians espouse bigotry are trying to label this act as a broad anti-Christian hate crime despite all indications pointing towards political violence particularly targeting those bigoted elements. But we must all have our blinders on...

I did learn one thing from this (now completely hilarious, in a twisted way) thread though. According to Wikipedia, the upper estimate of the casualities from the Crusades is 3 million. That's the ballpark for Pol Pot, and he did that in only three years. That shit is insane.

Naw it was just one crazy person. It was odd to me given that usually I hear about some religious nut shooting people.

This is the first time I heard of one nut killing religious (well not really) people.

The fact he was carrying all those sandwiches while going after a conservative, religious target says crazy to me. Because the logic connection between those two things really isn't there. Maybe he just freaking loved the sandwiches, who knows.

People asking why hate crimes deserve special treatment in direct reply to people explaining what hate crimes are actually about- Check

People asking why all muslims shouldn't be blamed for suicide attackers- Check

People labeling Hitler an atheist- Check

Congrats guys, you've successfully hit all three talking points!  The thread is now poisoned with inflammatory insults to huge groups of people that no meaningful conversation will take place.  I'd like to just congratulation you on what you've done.  You have successfully taken a tragedy that affects people you don't know and transformed it into an opportunity to create a thread to complain about how christians like you are complained just because other christians (such as myself) don't let you go around oppressing non-christians.  So go along now, enjoy the chance to wallow in your victimization.  You've earned it.  As a christian let me tell you, it's hard to be a christian in this country.  I fear for my life every day.

I've discovered that the FBI's hate crime statistics are really difficult to parse, and for some reason moral/philosophical/etc arguments about hate crime laws are way more popular than anyone actually using statistics. This applies to both sides.

I guess it'd be hard to actually justify it, though, considering any decrease in hate crimes could be pretty easily attributed to society become more accepting. So I'm really just going to have to concede that increased deterrence through increased penalties isn't actually a defensible argument for the laws. There are other defenses, though.

Here's a neat essay I found, for instance.

It could also be attributed to more Hate Crimes being filed as Assault, Murder, and what have you instead of as hate crimes.

Also that article is hillarious to read. I am not sure it is biased but it certainly loves to pretend it is in the opening paragraphs.

Exactly. It's a very nebulous area, so I can see why statistics don't really get brought into it too often.

Yes Christianity is clearly an oppressed minority in the US

Do you pay attention at all? The entire liberal world considers Christianity a butt-monkey for their amusement and almost as some sort of vast religion of evil. There are an assload of people on this very forum who disdain Christianity as a whole. Just because there's a lot of them doesn't mean that they can't be made fun of. You may live in a conservative, Christian-populated area like me, but that doesn't stop most of the world from saying "lolchristians".

Yes, really helping your case that Christians are an oppressed minority when the best you can come up with is mockery in response to tangible harm being done in the name of the religion.

...I didn't say that. Besides, mockery in response to tangible harm being done in the name of religion is verboten when the religion happens to be Islam.

I like both the religions. I don't like the violence.
