Shooting at Conservative Family Research Council.
« on: August 17, 2012, 02:37:16 pm »

http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/16/us/dc-shooting/index.html

According to CNN

Quote
Corkins "has strong opinions with respect to those he believes do not treat homosexuals in a fair manner,"

And Obama doesn't consider it a hate crime. As well, witnesses say Corkin said "I don't like your politics" before he opened fire.

So, what does Bay12 General Discussion think about it?

Pretty par for the course.
There's not exactly a war on Christianity, but the bigotry towards it is astounding.

Who is "he", the shooter (heaven forbid), or the security guard?

And Obama doesn't consider it a hate crime.

In the article itself that apparently you didn't read:

Quote
White House spokesman Jay Carney declined to say whether the White House considers the attack a hate crime, but said President Barack Obama "firmly believes that violence of that kind has no place in our society."

This is the only time hate crimes were mentioned in this article, and Obama said nothing about them.

Pretty par for the course.

But I do agree. There have been too many religiously-motivated shootings lately. Simply terrible.

Point of order, this actually was an LGBT rights (the LGBT community has to their credit decried this violence) motivated shooting.

But yeah, declined to say, it's beltway speak.

Doesn't politically motivated violence count separately from "hate crimes"?  Hate crimes implies being bigoted (eg beating up someone because they're black, or gay, or female) rather than not liking someone's politics.

Pretty par for the course.

Yes Christianity is clearly an oppressed minority in the US

This is proof that both sides have real nasty people on them.

If their beliefs were reversed, you can be assured it would be called a hate crime (which is a term I absolutely despise, as it has become merely a vessel for double standards)
So you can see where Urist McDrowner is coming from. Because it is a hate crime. If it was reversed, it would have been called out as such. But, because the roles were how they were, it isn't.

Right. That is because it is not a hate crime. Just because you reverse something does mean it is the same type of thing.

I think there's two different definitions of hate crimes. In common parlance, it's a killing motivated by beliefs. Legally, I think it has to be something else. This, with political motives, could be considered in law to be domestic terrorism.

So a pro-gay marriage guy shooting a pro-marriage guy is better than a pro-marriage guy shooting a pro-gay guy?

The irony I find in this statement is amusing.

Prepare yourself for the inevitable media shitstorm blaming this on Obama, I guarantee you'll see it.

No. Thanks for putting words in my mouth. But no.

If it makes you feel better to put a scary sounding label on everything, this seems to pretty clearly be terrorism. Or a wackjob.

Edit: Actually the answer to the first question might very well be yes. All else being equal that is. Both are bad. But I would say, all else being equal, it is less bad to kill 'pro-marriage' person then kill ' pro-gay marriage' person.
