Werebeast Quarantine Duration?
« on: August 16, 2012, 09:02:39 pm »

My fort just suffered an attack by a weretortoise, which infected a blacksmith before turning back into an elf and fleeing.  Some fool brought the blacksmith back to my fort rather than leaving him to die of his wounds.  Later, the blacksmith turned and was put-down by my militia (who only had some basic armor on) and so they suffered some injuries.

My Militia Commander's leg was badly hurt from the fight.  The were tortoise had bit his leg and shaken him about, severing an artery.  He had leather leggings on as protection, and the fight log showed that the bite itself was stopped by the leggings, but nonetheless while in the weretortoise's jaws, the Commander sustained a bleeding injury.

I made a hospital zone with a lockable door and he was transferred into it, and so far has not yet transformed (it's been about half a season) nor has my hunter who healed up quick and is wandering loose in the halls.  How long do you have to wait before you know for sure whether a dwarf is clean or not?  Also, how do you go about setting up a quarantine area in a very young fort?

If he was bit then he should be infected, sadly. The true way to tell will to be to watch the moon phase indicator (I believe it is in the top right) and when it goes full then if he is infected he will transform.

To set up a quarantine area simply make a room with lockable doors and lock them prior to the full moon. I don't believe that werebeasts are building destroyers, so doors should hold them just fine.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

In fort news, a season after the were-blacksmith was killed (interestingly his shell was severed in the fight, so I might be able to make a craft from it), another were-tortoise showed up.  I thought I might be doomed to suffer total fort infection since my wall was not yet complete, but he ended up chasing chimpanzees around until he changed back into a kobold and scampered off.

I'm fairly sure this means that I don't have any infected dwarves, since I have definitive evidence that a full moon came and went.  yay! Dodged a bullet there!

I'll have to look for this moon-phase indicator you mentioned.  Any idea how many full moons there are in a year?  The blacksmith seemed to transform fairly soon after his tortoise-mauling, so my guess is about ~1 per month.

The last time I had an infected dwarf I noticed it being 26 days, but I think it varies from world to world. 1 month/28 days is probably the intended average.

A bite needs to break the skin to actually infect.
