Legends of Pegasus (4X Space TBS w/ RTS combat)
« on: August 16, 2012, 03:26:16 pm »

Didn't see a topic on this so I figured I'd start one and warn everyone here:

The game is unfinished, buggy as hell, and I'd hold off on purchasing it if you were considering it.

From the SA thread (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3500743):
Quote
What is Legend of Pegasus?

Legend of Pegasus is a 4x strategy game similar to, sword of the stars. Where it combines turn based gameplay and switches real time strategy during fleet battles. The game was programmed by Novacore Studios and is being published by Kalypso.

Just take a gander at the reviews from Metacritic, Amazon, etc.

Or even on their own forums:

It's being compared to SotS2 launch. Yeah, it's that bad.

===

Of course, Steam is refusing refunds (although Amazon is refunding and I've heard of at least one other retailer pulling it from the shelves so as to "not disappoint more customers") and the devs have only offered unstated "compensation" for folks who got stuck paying for a broken, unfinished game. Is it any wonder why some people "demo" games when they're released instead of handing over the cash immediately?

Oh, and the best part? They're charging $40 for the game.

UPDATE 8/17/2012:

http://forum.kalypsomedia.com/showthread.php?tid=16199

Quote
We sincerely apologize for the problems and disappointment experienced during the launch of this title and to show our commitment to both the game and our community we will be providing free Steam keys for our titles "Patrician IV" and "Dungeons".

That lessens the sting a little bit (esp. since I don't own either of those titles). I'm still going with 'never buy a game on launch day until you "test" or "demo" it first'. It's not even about the money; it's about the principle (and the fact that Steam won't do refunds even in cases of outright fraud like this).

That's 40 bucks I saved by "testing" (if you get what I mean) a game before buying it. Looked very good on the sales page, but plays like a catastrophe. Units bug out, the UI is godawful and the art in some points is just appaling. Maybe if the devs don't give up and get round to fixing the game it might end up to its potential. While buggy it doesn't feel like a trainwreck as massive as SoTS II.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

Steam is Steam. They put it right in their required-to-buy-and/or-to-keep-playing-your-games-agreement that You Can't Get Ye Refund.

Was contemplating to get this because I love 4X. Lucky I didn't take the bait.

Which can not override the consumer laws of individual countries, you just have to press the issue in those cases.

Anyways, wasn't this the game that was discussed in an earlier space game thread where someone linked a statement by the devs that they "do not test their game" or some such nonsense. Well seems I was of a right mind when I decided not to get this at launch :p

It was in the endless space thread, and it was indeed a dev statement that they didn't have the time to test the game as much as they liked. (Apparently this means not at all.)

So it's the publisher's fault: Kalypso.

I never really understood publishers forcing developers to release their products before they're clearly finished. I understand that some projects go deeply over time and I guess it might be responsible to release the product in those cases. Stuff like this and Sword of the Stars II felt like if they only had a month or two more of development they would have released a much better product however.
A couple weeks could have made the difference of about 40 metacritic points and there would have been a lot less people demanding a refund.

This has always annoyed me about Paradox, they make some awesome games but they seem to really put the pressure on other devs to
release on time that has destroyed a whole bunch of games. See Gettysburg or Swar of the Stars II.
I'm not really sure how you can combat games going over time, I assume sometimes it just happens. I wish they would just slap a sticker on the store page saying "GAME STILL IN DEVELOPMENT, BUY TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPERS", it would really stop a lot of the hate towards the project, the publisher and the developer. Consumers don't seem to be negative towards buying a half-finished project as long as they're promised a finished product.

As for the whole Steam not offering refund thing, it's just bollocks. Any decent country with any decent consumer protection laws can easily get a refund. Steam hiding this fact behind their annoying little EULA should be internationally condemned. Steam's power in the market place has been a great thing for consumers but now with their deathgrip it seems things might start to get worse for the consumers.

Sword of the Stars 2 is shaping up to become a great game. Kerberos release weekly patches and they have come a long way in supporting the game. There is no excuses for a broken game at launch, but the least they should do is to patch the game until it becomes playable.

Yeah, only trouble is:

I've no problem supporting game devs and buying into alpha/beta products but (rightly IMO) feel misled when games are released as finished products when they are obviously not. Also, lack of demos, gameplay vids, etc. seems intentional but in reality, it's probably that the devs just didn't have time to do them due to the impending release date.

I'm still hoping Steam will do that whole "one-time customer service gesture of a store credit" for me on this one.

It's buisness. I'm not one to leap to publishers defense, but you can't hold the devs blameless in all these situations. If a development studio enters into an agreement to produce a game by X date, and then don't budget their time and resources properly it's not entirely the publishers fault if they then have to release a poor product.

So we can get refunds in the USA? Because USA is best country*, obviously, and we have this Better Business Bureau which... sends complaints to companies?

* Not actually my opinion, as it is patently obvious that it isn't true if you pay any attention to anything
