Low space on disk C:
« on: August 15, 2012, 04:04:32 pm »

So guys, i have a problem, basically my disk C: has almost 50 GB total space on it (I have D: for all other stuff though, which is 184 GB) and, while stuff i counted on C: are basically 10-15 GB, but i have only 500 MB left. it keeps going until 200 then back to 1Gb, i keep cleaning it and defragmentating and checking for viruses and even checked for errors and all that happens is that space goes down. How would i fix it? I dont feel like formatting because i dont know how to install windows again etc. and have save files on C: (Even when games are on D:, saves go to C:)
So help because i feel its slowing the computer down.

Go into C: and see which folders are which sizes?

For rooting out large and unwanted files, I recommend Windirstat, which stands for Windows Directory Statistics. It's a very helpful free program which shows you the files on your drive in a graphic chart.

If you're having trouble identifying what your space is being used for, this is definitely what you want.

No, get lost, i am not buying anything, i have sufficent space for stuff, i just didnt know what takes up so much on C:
That was not helpful, anyway.

-snip-

Thanks, actually i got Space Monger and scanned C: and found files that were memory hogs. 6 Gb free now, but still free space is lowering somehow.
Reinstalled Warcraft III RoC and TFT on D:, removed some installers and stuff.

Check the temp files used by your internet browser. While it's not a commonplace thing, sometimes browsers can caches several gigs worth of information that you aren't actually using.

There's a utility called Temp File Cleaner that's really good at this, managed to clear a couple gigs out of my laptop a week ago. It goes through all the temporary folders from all sorts of sources and clears them out properly.

Also be sure to empty the recycle bin after deleting. You are probably doing this already, but if not, do so. If you don't, stuff will just sit in there after deleting it, continuing to eat up hard drive space.

Internet Cache builds up real fast, run CCleaner to clean everything out. Also do not throw away the idea of buying a new hard drive cause 50gb is really small, you're better off imaging it and put it on a bigger drive.
Don't bitch at me for saying that though cause
one: c drive is gonna fill itself up no matter what even with a second drive and just gonna have to get a bigger one
two: my phone is bigger than your hard drive :/

I vaguely recall a bug in an antivirus program (Symantec, IIRC) that would fill up your hard drive infinitely until the space ran out... If you've got that, check its program folder.

I recently moved my entire Users folder to my F: drive (eeepc with 16GB primary SSD (upgraded from 4GB) and 16GB secondary) to free up 1GB of space on C:. I don't recommend doing it, because it's really bloody difficult, but it helped.

EDIT: Check the drive and size of your page file. Also if you have hibernate enabled, that creates a file on C: the same size as your ram. If space is that important, disable hibernate :)

delete some stuff you're not using. How old is this computer anyway? I've not seen a 50Gb HDD for years, it honestly sounds to me like someone partitioned the larger HDD. Last time I walked into a PC store: "yes sir, it has two HDD."
Bloody sales assistants, it's one Hard drive partitioned into one usable space and one ridiculously small space. ::)

I'd suggest just buying an external HDD. You can easily get a 500Gb one for about £80.
or a 2TB one for £79.99. Godsdamn but that is a lot of space for pron. Technology sure does march on fast, I would have killed for that 5 years ago.

Seriously, internal HDD seem to be so expensive for the amount of storage they have compared to external ones. way back when I think my 500Gb internal was about £30.

You can actually get 4TB internal hdds now, if you want.

You can get an internal 500GB disk for ~£40 now.

I don't know how you live with a 50GB drive honestly. My computer has two 1.5TB drives. My C: drive has about 480GB free, my D has about 350-400GB free at any given time. I have to regularly archive files to an external drive to keep them clear for new stuff.

Eh, I can't use my PC anyway; I have to make do with this shitty HP laptop.

Besides, my old PC is outdated anyway, I built one in 2004 or so and I'm going to need a new motherboard and processor anyway, unless they finally decide to cut the price of those faptastic QX Extreme processors. It's still a good PC and I've not even used half the available storage space yet, but since LGA775 got shafted in favour of the new i7 stuff I'm feeling pretty cranky.
