Color coding statis
« on: August 15, 2012, 02:10:58 pm »

Just looking for a little input to help figure out which colors will match with what so I can more easily design an interface for a game I'm making for work.

When the survey is complete, will we have access to the results?

Of note, you might want to consider flashing/glowing colors at your disposal.

Sure, I could do that.

Not really something I want to do.

First, I was wondering whether you were color-coding "status" or "statues."  Now that I know you mean STATS, okay.

Question: will this be used in text, in colored blocks, in complex icons, or what?  Because you've got to think about how readable it will be, especially against some background.

More or less colored bars.  Not text or icons.  And background can be considered later, as I can pretty much either say "ok, ignore yellow because that's my background" or go "hmm, yellow is one of the colors I want to use, let me tweak my background to provide contrast."

Then, awesome.  And I already filled out the survey.

The results (so far) are really kind of interesting.

Going to see if I can garner a few more responses before publishing.  Thanks for your help. :)

Can't share the results directly (PRO only feature).  So doing my best, here.

Spoiler: Charts! (click to show/hide)

(The "other" colors were not that interesting, gray, one yellow, magenta, a burgundy, and one cyan (which I figured people would use light blue for))

Given that there are some conflicts, here's another poll.

As far as poison and range go, you could have different shades, dark green for poison and a lighter one for range. Just put them next to each other and make sure that they are different enough to be discernable with a glance.

Certainly a possibility.  I probably will discard some of the results, but I wanted to know what people thought.

Those sure are some interesting results.  I think I missed the "most common" color for almost all of them.

And I did your new survey.  I found myself thinking about how the colors would look together, and that kinda influenced my voting.  In the end, you might want to pick some second-most-common colors just to make sure there's variety on the screen.
