Cross-Breeding?
« on: August 15, 2012, 12:02:23 pm »

I started a new fortress and I am quite a noob right now. I started out with a Yak bull and a Water buffalo cow. They both are cow sub-species I think. Not sure though. Anyway, can these two breed together? And while Im at it, can any other "similar" animals cross-breed, like horses and donkeys, to create mules? It is possible IRL, so I think it should be possible in DF aswell.

Cross-breeding is impossible in Dwarf Fortress.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I did find mules in the wiki. They are all "sterile", and are made by breeding  horses and donkeys. Is that the only exception or is it possible in some other cases aswell?

You are new so I don't fault you, but you should realize when Quietust tells you something is impossible it is impossible.

They're sterile because there are no females with which to breed (this is mentioned in the DF wiki article).  You only get them from the magical lands outside the fortress, where you can also get other unobtainable materials such as a barrel of fly brains or snakeman venom.  They are not created in the game by breeding horses and donkeys.

Ok, thanks for answering. I hope cross-breeding will be added in a future update though, it would indeed add a great deal of realism  :D Thanks for helping an utter noob though.

If you really want interspecies breeding feel free to vote for it over on the eternal voting page, I think it's like number 34 right now.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I've just started to look into modding but would it be possible to re-organize creatures by Genus (for example) with differing castes for the species to start working towards cross-breeding?

Not really, since offspring are of a totally random caste having absolutely no relation to the castes of either parent.

You could but there are a few problems with that:
1)It would take an immense amount of work, and your creature entries would be enormous.
2)All of the species in a single creature could interbreed and the offspring would be a random caste (species). As such you could end up with things like 2 different seagull species mating and producing a third species. Alternatively you could end up with two horses mating and producing a donkey somehow.
3)Some tokens that you might want to use are creature level instead of caste level. Any species that had those tokens would need to be moved along with similar species into it's own creature, limiting crossbreeding and making even more work to do.

IRL, I think water buffalo and yaks are about as likely to interbreed as, say, hippos and pigs.
