Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Journal Entry - Date Unknown

It has been a week since I last ate, and the guards no longer respond to my shouting. If not for the slow seep of the leaking stonework on the wall, I would be dead of dehydration by now. The bones of this cell's previous occupant do nothing to ease my mind. I have lost all count of the months and seasons, I may have been here for years. I don't even remember my own name... Isaac. I think it was Isaac. I hear a distant sound and rush to bang on the door, hoping it is a guard bringing food. I must eat...

The sound comes again, almost a roar. I back away from the door, frightened. What is it? I hear something roar again, and a great flapping of wings. The sound is deafening, but in a way it is something I recognize. Something deep down in my bones responds to the sound, I feel a great heat in my chest. I awaken with a start to realize it was a dream.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I climb out of my bedroll and look around my camp. I escaped from that cell two days ago, but the experience still haunts me. If the quake hadn't shifted the rock and shattered the door, allowing me to escape, I would have been another pile of bones in a bandit's prison. They caught me while I was out hunting and wanted to ransom me for gold. They were angry when they found out I lived alone, and had no one willing to pay them. I never did find them, or any bodies, but I didn't search long. Once free, I left the camp and began running. Now here I am, the only belongings I have are what I could pilfer from the camp before leaving. A longbow, a handful of arrows, and some stinking fur armor one of the bandits left out in the cold to delouse. Judging by the itching, it wasn't quite free of stowaways when I stole it. At least the bow is decent, probably locally made in one of the towns nearby. The arrows are a good find, straight shafts and good fletching with steel heads.

Another roar makes me look up. I wasn't dreaming that? I hear the heavy beating of wings again as it becomes more distant. I can smell something now as well, something burning.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Following the smell leads me to a small stone marker, it looks like this poor soul tried to use it as cover but a mage fried him. The body is burnt to a crisp, and falls away in ash. The only thing that survived whatever happened to him was a journal, which the person must have dropped prior to being incinerated.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What is this nonsense? The journal is quite a tale, claiming a dragon swooped in and destroyed Helgen to free Ulfric Stormcloak, whoever that is. I've been in prison for a long time, and I never did keep up on current events, but I doubt I could have missed the fact that dragons now roam the countryside. At least now I know the year... 201. I was imprisoned for over a year in that stinking hole! If I ever find those bandits... I'd better get back to my home and see if I can get a good change of clothes and a good meal. First though, I'm curious about this dragon business. If there's any truth to it, I will need to be very very careful, the Imperials always get riled up when unexpected events start upsetting their perfect order, and I look enough like a bandit to be attacked on sight, or at least imprisoned without much cause. The man who died was no ranger, and left an obvious trail back to the mouth of a cave.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The cave is pleasant enough. It looks old... I wonder why he was in here. After a ways, I enter a large cavern. There is a cart here filled with wine... strange. A few bones about the place and a lot of shed fur leads me to believe this is the den of a Black Bear, and I probably shouldn't stay long.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Deeper into the cave I find a web-covered cave with several frostbite spiders. They're not much of a threat to a bow, and a few well-placed arrows kills them. I take a moment to harvest some of their venom, it could come in handy. Unfortunately the way further was blocked by a cave-in, but from the angle I think it connected to somewhere in Helgen. Maybe the dead guy really did come from there? If there was an attack though, there will be Imperials as well and I shouldn't investigate just yet.

Heading back out of the cave, I continue on the road to a small town I remember, Riverwood.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The people of Riverwood mostly ignore me. Hunters are common enough in the area, and I try to look as innocent as possible. A few people nod to me, and nobody mentions any dragon attack. Helgen isn't far away, you would think they'd be bubbling with news about it if it were true. Regardless, I'm not sure what to do now.

Should I head back to Helgen to determine the truth of all this? Stay here in Riverwood for a bit? Or should I head back home, away from this nonsense? If I remember right, the bridge here would take me out to Whiterun, which is a larger city and the capital of the Hold here. I've been there a few times to sell pelts and trade for supplies, but I didn't really like the place.

Just a quick few things.

1. As I said I will not be able to update until after work, so keep making suggestions if you like, don't wait for the update before suggesting something else.
2. As you can already see, I will not be strictly following the Skyrim storyline, main quest, or even scripted conversations. The purpose of this is to entertain you, the reader, and allow you to suggest some actions. Things wildly out of character will be ignored (e.g. "Murder everyone in riverwood lololol") but most suggestions will be considered or attempted.
3. I do have some mods active which make things much much harder. For starters, you cannot just walk around outside in a blizzard. I have a mod installed which keeps track of your core temperature, exposure to the elements, etc taking into account what you are wearing and where you are.

Some areas of Skyrim are warm enough to walk around unprotected, some require you to bundle up a bit. I may be forced, at times, to switch to more protective clothing vice better armor depending on just how cold it is. To help with this, I also have a few camping mods installed. We can create bedrolls, tents, fire kits, etc. We can also craft heavy cloaks out of various pelts and leather strips which provide good exposure protection. I'll give a full list of mods later on.

In addition, I have a survival mod which introduces complex needs. We must eat, drink, and sleep in regular realistic intervals. Heavy activity and severe exposure to the elements drain our needs faster, etc. Carrying a ridiculous amount of crap also drains our needs faster, so we're best off traveling light. Fast travel is disabled as well, so horses will be our best friend.

To compensate, wildlife have realistic drops. No more killing an elk and getting 2 cuts of meat. No killing a goat and getting one or no legs. The last elk I killed in testing this gave 48 pieces of meat, each of which weighed 5.5lbs. Wolves drop teeth and eyes and wolf meat in addition to their pelt. Animals no longer have rings or gold or other silly things. Should be fun!

Journal Entry - 17th of Last Seed 4E 201

Before heading off anywhere I decided to ask a few people around town about the dragon sighting.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

An old woman named Hilde apparently saw the dragon, and said it flew directly over the village and then off to the west. I spoke to a few other townspeople as well.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A woman named Gerdur apparently runs most things in town, and owns the sawmill which is the primary source of income for the town. She hadn't heard of any dragons, and called Hilde a 'crazy old bat'. She was too busy to talk for long, but she mentioned I could make some coin working the sawmill or bringing her cut wood. I'll keep that in mind, I may need some money soon.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Lucan Valerius owns the Riverwood Trader, the only general store in this sleepy little town. The only other shop is the blacksmith, but I couldn't find the smithy. Someone mentioned he had gone to Whiterun to fetch more materials. Lucan was too upset over a recent robbery to talk about the 'dragon nonsense' as he called it. It seems that several bandits broke into his shop and stole a solid gold ornament shaped like a dragon's claw. Why would he have such a thing? Why would they want it? I counted half a dozen things in the shop more valuable than the claw would be, but he said nothing else was touched. My curiosity was piqued, so I offered to look into it if I should happen to go that way. He seemed grateful and offered me a reward, hinting that it could be quite substantial. His sister Camilla offered to show me to the bridge. I accepted politely as she was being kind, and was quite pretty.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It was getting late so I went to the little inn, I forget the name now... sleeping giant or somesuch. It is run by a couple named Delphine and Orgnar. Delphine thought the dragon story was ridiculous, even after I showed her the journal. Orgnar just shrugged and told me about a rumor up in Windhelm, and showed me a bounty posted by the Jarl. I bought some refreshments and rented a room (10 gold) to sleep the night. The next morning I decided to scout the approach to Bleak Falls Barrow, to see if I could spot these bandits. Along the way I saw a deer eating at the side of the road. My arrow flew true and I took its meat and hide. I won't go hungry today!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Further up the path I ran into a wolf which was similarly dispatched. I took its teeth and hide as my trophy and moved on, I'm not about to eat wolf meat when I have plenty of fine venison! A few more hides and I could make myself a nice cloak and hood to warm me against this cold weather, or I could tan them and make some better armor than these lice-infested bandit rags.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ahead along the road I heard voices and saw a small ruined tower. There were three distinct voices, all arguing about someone else who 'went ahead' and 'took the claw' without them knowing. These are the bandits all right. They haven't seen me, so I backed away. I didn't get a good look at them.

At this point I figure I have 6 options.

1. Continue to Whiterun and warn the Jarl about the dragon attack. Perhaps it is nothing, but if true it could be very important.
2. Explore Bleak Falls Barrow. This would mean slaying the bandits... I have never killed another man before and my hands shake just contemplating taking on three armed bandits with nothing but a bow and a dagger.
3. I could pursue the bounty from the Jarl's men... but the same apprehension applies as option 2.
4. Stick around Riverwood a while, hunt a few more animals and build up a small stash of gold. Perhaps even cut and tan some leather for a new set of armor.
5. Head back to Helgen and see if anyone survived, and corroborate the story in the journal.
6. Ignore all of this and head home. My house will be in sorry state after a year of no attention but it is my land and my home.

Journal Entry - 18th of Last Seed 4E 201

My earlier apprehension was unfounded. It appears I am perfectly capable of killing. Though I am thoroughly disgusted at myself for the relative ease I seem to have with ending another's life, I am somewhat fascinated as well. It is not something I ever considered, murdering another person.

But I am getting ahead of myself.

I set out this morning after a hardy breakfast of venison, grilled leeks and mead. I was feeling rather better about my fortunes today, and resolved to explore the area around Riverwood before heading off. I need to get some supplies and equipment before I head out across Skyrim. It is dangerous away from civilization, and if I were caught in a blizzard or snow drift now I would likely freeze to death. I went out hunting, and almost right away found a small pack of wolves.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My arrows dispatched them quickly, and I took their hides and teeth. With this, and the leather from the Deer, I was able to fashion a very comfortable and warm wolfskin cloak. I also stopped to fill some of the empty wine bottles I still had with water from the river. It always helps to have some extra water, in case you get caught in a storm and are unable to forage.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Whilst exploring a bit more, I came across a cave. I ventured inside and was immediately accosted by a bandit woman. A furious struggle ensues, but my dagger was quick and I cut her down before I realized what I was doing. She was dressed in filthy rags and furs, much like those I had stolen. I wonder if she was part of the band that kidnapped and imprisoned me? I wonder what her name was, and what led her to banditry. I will never know now... she must have had hopes and dreams like any person, but they will never be realized.

Exploring further into the cave, I found that this is indeed a bandit group's lair. Most of them must have been out banditing though. Further in I found a prison cell. Gazing at the cell brought back memories of my incarceration, and a hardness gripped my heart.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

While I was thinking about those days, the guard came back and started. He shouted a warning and jumped me, but I was faster. I cut his throat and laid him to rest upon the dirty stone floor.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Nearby I found the stash where they protected their ill-gotten gains. I helped myself.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Exploring further, I found the true entrance to this place. It appears to be an abandoned iron mine that the bandits have taken residence in. Hopefully my actions here have halted their operation for the forseeable future. I ambushed one guard outside and dispatched him quickly.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I return to town now, and it is not yet mid-day. I have struck a blow for law and order, and perhaps finding their comrades dead in their filthy cave will convince the bandits to move on. Either way, they shouldn't trouble the people of Riverwood again. Lucan was happy to purchase some of the gems and other items I procured, though he did look at me askance clearly wondering where I had gotten them. I said nothing... I can still feel the blood on my hands, despite washing them twice today.

I must consider my next move, but I am no longer apprehensive about encountering bandits or thieves. I have a healthy amount of coin now, and could probably afford the equipment necessary to make overland travel safe. I have a good amount of food and other essentials. If I can find a few more wolf pelts I could make a hood to go with my cloak, to further protect me from the elements, and perhaps some actual leather armor to better protect me from my enemies.

Indeed.. The reason I didn't scout up towards the barrow any further than I did was because I very nearly died from the cold. The fur boots and gloves provide decent protection but the armor is the variant with no sleeves and an exposed midsection which doesn't really help keep out cold weather, and the 'fur helmet' is like a coonskin cap, sure its warm but not really arctic weather gear.

A cloak and hood will go a long way towards protecting me from the cold, and I'll probably get together a set of traveling gear as things go on.

Journal Entry - 19th of Last Seed 4E 201 (Cont.)

What am I? Yesterday was a revelation. I have done things only heard of in the tales of old, and feel a power stirring within me that begs to be unleashed. I must know more about what is going on... but again I get ahead of myself.

Yesterday I resolved to clear Bleak Falls Barrow and return Lucan's property. Before heading up, I decided to improve my gear a bit. Gerdur gave me the okay to use the forge while Alvor was out of town, so I purchased some leather from Lucan (at quite a high price...) and worked it for a few hours along with a bit of iron to craft a good strong suit of leather armor, as well as bracers and boots. I also made myself a padded hood lined with some fur scraps from the last wolf hide I had, which should help in keeping me warm. I reinforced the armor, and restrung my bow to keep it in good condition. I had to chop a bit of wood at the mill to pay for all of this, but it was worthwhile.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Whilst working at the mill, I was approached by a man named Faendal. He seemed to have a grudge against Sven because Lucan's sister fancied the bard... or didn't fancy Faendal. I don't know, it seemed juvenile. He then asked me to deliver a false letter to Camilla claiming it was from Sven, as if this would sway her heart and set her against the bard. What a devious and cowardly plan... I decided to uncover the plot and tell Camilla the truth. A Nord woman can make up her own mind about who to love, and doesn't need some conniving elf to lying to manipulate her. It went as well as can be expected. He mentioned a bard college, but I'm not terribly interested in singing for a living. It is a noble profession, but I can barely hold a note.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With that completed, I made my way towards Bleak Falls Barrow. The air was bitterly cold, the wind was clawing at my flesh like a thing alive. It sought out any opening in my clothing and stole my blood's warmth away. Its hard to tell, but I'd swear it wasn't this cold in the area before I was taken prisoner. As I approached the ruined tower, I noted two guards out front.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I shot one, and he fell quickly. The other rushed at me and the battle was joined.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The battle only lasted mere minutes, but it felt like ages. I was on form, finding it easy to dodge the blows. I blocked with shield and struck with my dagger, faster than the bandits could recover. With no fire, they must have been suffering from the bitter cold same as me. Perhaps that is why I won... perhaps there is another reason. I helped myself to a small stash of coins and goods before moving on up the trail.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As the barrow came into view, I let out a low whistle. By my ancestors, who could have built such a place? The vaulted stone arches and architecture spoke to ancient nordic traditions ingrained in my blood. I knew this was a holy site, and these bandits had defiled it. The dead here would not be pleased. Perhaps I could win some measure of solace for them by slaying the interlopers. It did not take long, and ice gripped my heart as I cut them down without mercy.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Two more souls had departed this realm thanks to me. I was disgusted at the ease with which I performed these actions, but looking back on it now it's as if I was gripped by a sort of fever. By then I was freezing nearly to death, my limbs sluggish and numb, but when the killing started a rage welled up within me like I had never felt, and strange words danced upon my lips. I found myself snarling as I waded into the bandits. As their corpses lay lifeless, the primal feeling left me numb and cold once again. I was drawn to the door, and the smell of fire. The smell promised warmth... perhaps I would not die in this gods-forsaken place.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The primal rage gripped me again as I saw the two bandits hugging close to the fire for warmth. They did not delay me for long, but I looked away in shame as my dagger dispatched them to Aetherius. I say a prayer now for their souls; they were brothers of Skyrim, no matter how wayward. The fire warmed my flesh and lifted my spirits. I sat for a short meal of bread and cheese, along with some mead, and then continued on. The caves were ancient, and many burial urns littered the path. I left them undisturbed, I would not steal from my ancestors. They deserved their rest.

As I approached a chamber I saw a man's shape and quickly extinguished my torch. The man, likely another bandit, muttered to himself and then pulled a lever. Darts shot out of the wall and slew him... poison? I approached after I was sure he was dead. He had a nice cloak

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I took his cloak and his gold. I had heard of these locking mechanisms in the old stories... the Snake, Whale and Eagle are sacred animals of the ancestors, and their images are used often in ancient icons. I made the symbols match those on the wall, and when I pulled the lever the door opened. That wasn't too difficult... Beyond the door was a short ramp. I was jumped by a few skevers, but they fell without trouble. Inside the next web-choked cave I (surprise!) found a spider. It was massive, the largest frostbite spider I'd ever seen. Fortunate for me, it was also wounded... likely by its last victim who was yelling for help nearby, caught in a web like a fly. The spider did not prove difficult, and its slaying makes this region just that small bit safer for honest folk.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Thus it was that I met Arvel the Swift, as he called himself. The man was caught in a web, but I freed him. By way of repayment, he ran away laughing... but he got what was coming to him in the end.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I found Arvel dead just ahead, but not before his passage had awakened the ancestral dead to defend the barrow. I tried to calm the restless spirits, but they shouted at me in rage and I was forced to defend myself. Ancestors forgive me, I only did what I did to preserve my own life. I took nothing from the honored dead, and said a prayer over each one I dispatched, that their soul may return to Sovngarde with honor. Despite what I was forced to do, I have the claw now and Arvel's journal mentions the secret of its use. It seems quite simple, as the icons engraved upon the claw likely open another such locking mechanism.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Though I was forced to destroy a few more of the honored dead, I had reached the central chamber of the Barrow. I should have left at this point, I had the claw... something within me urged me onwards. Something ahead beckoned me forth. It was a force I could not resist, and so I continued. Within the chamber, I found the most remarkable thing that I have ever lain eyes on. I also nearly died.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Inside I found a wall of words in a language I had never seen, and yet I understood them all. The wall pulsed with an ancient power which gripped my soul and pulled me forward. As I approached, the knowledge and wisdom of the ancients flowed into my very being, and I understood for the first time in my life that I was different. I felt the first stirrings of an ancient power within me that day, a power which had awakened and demanded to be used. I must learn more about this, perhaps there is someone who can teach me to use this power. As I stood contemplating the new future which had unfurled before my eyes, the Lord of the barrow rose from his icy tomb and attacked me. His voice was thunder and knocked my sword from my hand. As I scrambled for it, he attacked me again and again. It was a long fight, as the honored lord matched me blow for blow until a lucky strike from my shield knocked him to his knees.

I ran him through with a prayer for forgiveness, and wished him well on his journey to Sovngarde. It was only afterwards that I realized... I had dispatched an ancient Wight Lord! Me... the simple hunter left for dead in a bandit's prison. I must have a destiny in store for me, these events must have a meaning. I took the lord's blade as my own, and made to exit the caves.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I emerged into a sunlit area near Riverwood, a hidden exit from the old temple it seems. I passed by a lonely cabin where an old woman named Anise wished me well and smiled a lot. She was creepy, but I had other things on my mind. Lucan was overjoyed to have the claw back, and rewarded me handsomely. It was only a few hours after mid-day, but I was exhausted by my trip and chilled to the bone. I retired to the Sleeping Giant and spent the last few hours of the day eating and listening to Sven's songs.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I slept until first light, and rose to the sounds of the town. They're at work early at the sawmill, and someone is feeding chickens outside. I am content for the moment, but I must find out more about what is going on, both with this strange power within me, and with the events of my homeland. I hear talk of war, rebellion, dragons... it worries me.

Very cool man, very cool.

I say you should head to Helgen to check out what is and isn't true about the rumors down there. Especially now that you're well equipped. After that, my vote would be for dealing with the bandits before heading to see the Jarl.

I'd also be very interested in your list of mods. I'm guessing Cloaks of Skyrim and one of the Hardcore overhauls. Not sure if I'd switch to them with my current game but they'd be nice to keep in mind for any other playthrough I'd want to do.

Journal Entry - 20th of Last Seed 4E 201

A lot has happened. As I write this, I am going through the day's events in my head and I still cannot believe them.

I am Dragonborn...

But to the beginning. I decided to set out for Helgen now that I was properly equipped. I set off just as a light ran blew in, and clouds began to dot the sky. Its a good thing I took the time to outfit, this rain could have been a major problem. Along the way I spotted a deer and brought it down. I took the hide and a few cuts of meat, as well as the antlers. After about an hour, I saw one of the towers of Helgen's wall. At first I thought "Maybe this was all a mistake..."

How wrong I was.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fires still burned in Helgen's smoldering corpse, as Skyrim herself wept for her fallen children. The rain tasted bitter, and I realized it was due to the ash in the air...  I bade the Nine watch over the fallen, and put Helgen to my back. The Jarl must be informed... but first I will solve his bandit problem. Perhaps that will make him more receptive. So it was that I set out along the road again, drawing my cloak tight about me and trying not to think about the ash-filled rain that covered me from head to toe, and what those ashes once were.

It took me a few tries to find the Camp of Silent Moons. The air was heavy with the rain and fog, but I spotted a sentry and laid him to rest swiftly. After that, the battle was on, and I rushed the bandits heedless of my own safety. A fever had gripped me once again, and the cold did not touch my limbs. When the snow settled, the guards outside were dead. Curious though, why would bandits care about an ancient forge? Come to think of it, the last bandits I killed were also working a forge. Are the local groups trying to arm themselves?

Inside I met the leader of the camp, but I did not give her chance to surrendur. I fell upon them like winter's wrath, and looking back on it now all I remember is a red haze.

When the three inside were dead, I searched the area. Nothing of much interest, a few coins and some iron. I found a locked door at the back, but the leader had a key on her which allowed entry.

An escape hatch, doubtless for when the Imperials came searching them out. I turned and began the journey to Whiterun. As I walked, the storm blew over and the sky cleared. I washed the blood off at a nearby stream, and began walking. By this point I was bone-weary and chilled, but I knew the Jarl must be warned. A dragon on the loose is a danger to all in the Hold. And to think just a few days ago I'd have called mad anyone raving about dragons...

Along the way I spotted a group of people taking on a Giant. I rushed to aid them, but they had it well in hand.

I asked about them, and a woman who identified herself as Aela the Huntress explained that they are part of a group called the Companions. She seemed amenable to my joining the group, which seemed like a good idea at the time considering my growing prowess at fighting. She explained that they are a mercenary group on retainer with Whiterun Hold, and they do jobs for the Jarl and other citizens when the pay is good enough. Interesting...

I explained to the guards at the gate that I had news of a dragon attack at Helgen. I expected to be laughed off, but their expressions turned grave and they ushered me in, explaining that the rumors had reached Whiterun, though no one with first-hand accounts had come forth. They asked me to see the Jarl as soon as possible, so I hastened to see him immediately.

I was granted an audience with Jarl Balgruuf immediately, and I explained the whole tale. He listened intently, and began to issue orders to his men to prepare. I was awed that such a powerful man would take action merely on my word, but the Jarl was deadly serious about protecting his Hold. He had the guards begin stockpiling water to fight fires, and ordered the watches doubled at each outlying watchtower. After this, he asked me to step aside with him and speak to his court wizard. I'd never met a wizard before, and I was a bit nervous.

He asked me to recover a stone tablet from Bleak Falls Barrow. I inquired politely if he meant the one I had with me, to which he reacted with surprise and appreciation. I handed it over and smiled, unsure what to do. He dismissed me and told me to 'see the Jarl' but was interrupted almost immediately by the Jarl's Housecarl. She summoned both of us to the Jarl. A dragon had been spotted at the Western Watchtower.

I was drafted by the Jarl and ordered to muster with the men near the gate. They sent me ahead to scout the area. I approached the tower with caution, pausing only to bring down an Elk. I am a hunter after all, and I will put the hide to good use. As I got close, smoke began rising from the tower and I could feel... something. Something inside me. It twisted and coiled in warning. I rejoined the Housecarl's men and we marched together towards the tower.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, the dragon reappeared! The fight was on. The Jarl's men spread out and began to fire at it, as did I. The combat was fierce, and the beast set the countryside ablaze with its fiery attacks. I was burned pretty badly, but a strange thing happened. When it breathed fire at me, I... well I realized I could hear the fire. It's the strangest thing, but it was as though the fire was a word and I understood it perfectly. The moment passed, but in that moment I learned the dragon's name. Mirmvlnir

My arrows ended the creature's life. Once the beast lay dead, I approached. That is when everything changed.

As I approached the corpse and lay my and upon it to check for breathing, the body burst into flames and.. something, some kind of energy, flowed into me. My mind was wracked with images and thoughts, feelings I'd never felt and words I'd never said played through my mind like a book brought to life and set at 100 times normal speed. I knew this dragon, and I knew the guard's words were true. From that moment, I was Dragonborn. I turned and loosed the loudest shout I have ever done. The word tore at the earth and flung debris into the air, flattening the grass before me. The power in my voice was truly astounding, and the guard bade me to see the Jarl again and tell him what had happened. The men began to clean up the area, though they gave the now-skeletal corpse a wide berth. On my way back to whiterun I was nearly knocked from my feat by an ear-shattering sound which rolled down the mountain. It spoke to my soul, though I did not know the meaning.

And just like that I had gone from forest hunter to Thane of a great Hold. The guards proclaimed that I was a hero, and the common folk in the hall all began to gossip about me. All wanted to know where I was from, who I was, but I ignored them. This was a lot to take in... I had a Housecarl? I was a Thane? The Jarl had elevated me to nobility in all but name. I didn't really want a Housecarl, as I work best alone, but thought I should at least meet her.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There it was again, that word. Hero. I didn't feel like a hero. I'd murdered bandits, and killed a noble beast. I'd taken its very soul... nevermind that it was threatening the Hold. Seeing my indecision, Lydia seemed to understand. She offered to give me some time to adjust to things, and said she would be here in the hall if I had need of her. I was grateful, and walked out into the crisp air to regain my senses. Everything was moving so fast at the time that I barely had time to think.

I walked down to the canal and took a seat, thinking about everything that had happened. Dragonborn... really? The last Dragonborn was Tiber Septim, if I remember the stories... He founded the Third Empire and was elevated to godhood by the people. What, I wonder, does fate have in store for me?
