I set up a minecart route following this ( http://gamingsession.taterunino.net/2012/05/15/how-to-set-up-minecarts-and-cart-hauling-in-dwarf-fortress/ ) and every single other tutorial that I could find's instructions word for word and my dwarves will not, no matter what I've tried for the last two hours, unload the cart.  All they do is fill it up and run it back and forth forever and never unload it.  I could use a track stop for dumping but I don't want to cheat. I've tried changing every single setting and starting from scratch with defaults more times than I can count. I've recreated the tracks, the minecarts, the stockpiles, the routes, I even created an entirely separate test route from A to B 3 blocks away from eachother and they still won't unload the godfucking cart. I'm about to put my monitor through the window.

I'm not uploading pictures or a description because it doesn't matter what configuration it's in, the dwarves will do everything except unload the piece of crap.

I hate dwarves.

Actually, consider this resolved.

I read the list of hauling bugs.  Promptly closed game.  Will wait for if it ever becomes playable.

It's fully playable, mine carts are a brand new feature so you can expect them to be a little buggy as just about every other feature was when it was first introduced. The next few releases will remove most of the wrinkles from the system and then toady will move on to implementing something else.

If you really have so much of a problem with "cheating" (I'm assuming you mean quantum stockpiling here, since I don't see what else here could possibly be contrived as cheating by somebody), why don't you just have them dump the cart next to the stockpile instead of on it? Then a dwarf will still have to go over and haul each object manually from the pile to the stockpile, just as they would need to do if they were unloading the cart. The only difference is that the cart can be carried back to the start instead of needing to sit there.

So set the track stop to dump from the minecart.  A quantum stockpile isn't cheating (certainly exploitative, though), but even if it was, you can dump things out of a minecart without creating a quantum stockpile.

Oh, and throwing a guy who blocks incessantly in a fighting game isn't cheating, either.

The game is playable, even if one single new feature is a wee bit buggy for you. Lots of people are willing to help, if you let them.

One problem I have fairly often is full minecarts, check to see if the minecart you assigned to the route is full of stuff that isn't set to be hauled on that route. But you would be better off adjusting your interpretation of cheating, and just embrace quantum stockpiling. Its hardly like the advantage if gives you is going to suddenly allow you to crush all enemies before you, DF is still as difficult as you allow it to be.

Minecarts aside, when dwarves actually start paying attention to stockpile settings, that's when I might start considering it playable.  I was using minecarts as a workaround for a hauling problem in the first place.

Maybe you guys are patient enough to put up with (or don't pay enough attention to) the dwarves doing things like grabbing a full (minus one) bin, taking weeks carry it over to place it on a single item, and then running back and grabbing a wheelbarrow to run it back to the stockpile,  even with input piles (which dwarves ignore because of another bug involving bins/barrels), sometimes turning off an entire industry for the entire period of time because they're carrying the bin full of job items.  But I do, and that's not 'playable' to me. 

Oh, and when I can eliminate an entire gameplay mechanic (item storage) by cramming an infinite amount of items onto one tile, in a space management game, that's cheating in my mind.  Totally irrelevant to me how you feel about it.


PS:  Please, continue to tell me how you think I should be playing a sandbox game instead of discussing issues that stop minecarts from working and ways to work around them without cheating taking advantage of exploits which give me an unintended gameplay advantage which is somehow not cheating.

Okay sure thing: first you need to adjust your attitude. Then you play it. If you make the ridiculous decision to consider Dwarf Fortress a "space management game" (whatever that is), then you are going to get annoyed by the minor bugs related to hauling. If you decide they are major problems when everyone else seems to be able to manage just fine that is up to you, but you are going to have a bad time.  I do have a mental checklist of things you can check that could cause the problem, but I would prefer to just reply in the manner you deserve.

Because then the pile has to be "takes from anywhere".

Not conform to my opinion, adjust what your expectations are. If stuff like this annoys you as much as it seems to you aren't going to enjoy a game that is constantly being updated, where the main focus is features and not bug fixes. That's not my opinion its just a fact. Stockpiles mostly work, minecarts mostly work.  If your opinion of them is that they are "unplayable" despite loads of evidence (other people talking about what they are doing) that they aren't, then you are either missing something, doing something wrong, or aren't going to enjoy playing DF for a long time (if it ever moves out of alpha). It's too late for that.  I've seen the light.  I know what it's like for stone to feel useful instead of something I need to chain-gang into the magma sea.

This is 90% of the DF that I play, though I'm working on playing the actual game more. :P

I'm sorry that we couldn't get your problem to work out, hopefully Toady comes out with a version that fixes the bugs with the new hauling system soon so you can enjoy playing again.
