The way air works in DF is that it basically doesn't exist. There's no sense of gaseous pressure at all. Miasma, steam, and mist will spread out and dissipate, but there's no sense of them carrying "pressure" per se, and when they're gone, they're gone totally.

It should be noted that DF is absolutely terrible about thermodynamics. For example, magma is always hot and thus could be used as an infinite heat source, and you've got plenty of cases of free-energy by using pumps and water-wheels.

I don't think items actually affect their surrounding temperature, though. Critters do, but not items. I remember having an adventurer find a lump of fire (cut from a random demon) in a pool, picking it up, and having all the fat in her hand melt.
Items affect nearby temperatures just like creatures do, it's just that the energy transfer rates are horrible, so the only times you ever see it happen are with the really extreme ends of the spectrum, and even then sometimes things aren't affected or it takes a while for them to be affected.

I was reading a little bit on a magma pump stack, and that a standard, small pump stack will lag quite a bit due to the constant temperature recalculation. There was a solution to have each level be a 3x1 area that held magma, so that most of the temperatures did not have to be recalculated every time that the pump stack pushed up some magma.
I bring this up to ask - would constructing nethercap walls and floors wherever magma is to be carried prevent temperature recalculation, or will the nethercap walls obtain the 10075 U that magma gives to adjacent walls?
I'm fairly certain the nether-cap walls would remain the same temperature but it wouldn't stop the temperature recalculation. It's just that instead of setting the wall temperatures to the hot temperature it would attempt to, then realize that they were nethercap and they didn't have to. Besides, for any sizable pump stack it would probably be much easier and faster to simply make each level a 1x3 reservoir then to gather the required amount of nether-cap needed (8 pieces of wood for each level of pumping).

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Also, food is utterly destroyed by consumption--nothing excretes waste--and you can grow an infinite amount of crops from one tile of farmland. Also, animals that don't graze can create a theoretically infinite number of descendants.

you can grow an infinite amount of crops from one tile of farmland.

More importantly, you can do this with ostensibly no external source of energy if you're doing it below ground.
