A thousand years ago, The dark Lord ruled supreme. His shadow covered the lands, and in the endless foul mists his creatures lurked. The Good nations of the Earth tried to resist, but they were defeated. The Dwarves, chosing death before defeat, collapsed their mountain Halls onto themselves. The elves, seeking recluse in their endless woods burned with their forests. The humans managed to unite themselves and raised the largest army ever seen. However, steel was not the only weapon in the Dark Lord's armory. What brute force could not accomplish, deceit and treason did. In the end, when all hope seemed lost Seven valiant knights rode forth and managed to defeat the Dark Lord by sheer cunning and loads upon loads of luck.
At least, that's the story you all heard. While some of you might not have not believed it, you do now. In some way or another you managed to procure a dark artefact. A completely black gem, not unlike the crystal used to magical power. These crystals whisper to you, and have revealed to you the secrets of magic. However, you are not alone, you have sensed the presence of others, at least five of them. With great concentration, you can speak to them, but not for long. Nevertheless, you are certain these crystals will be the key to deciphering the secrets of magic, and to accomplish your goals.

Magic consists of the manipulation of our world through the use of the mind. The power for these actions is derived from ambient magical fields in the ground or from crystalized deposits, or from an internal reserve. These magical fields are abudant, though sustained useage can deplete them. The power in the ground is refilled through a series of different sources from deep in the ground. Magical fields will automatically try to equalize themselves over time. When an exceptionally powerfull spell is cast, the very nature of the field can change.
Every magical spell creates a sort of different, activated magical energy. Almost always in very small amounts. When a spell fails, the amount of random background magic can quickly change. Background magic should be rapidly contained and properly deposited of, for in large amounts it will result in random magical effects happening.

Might look similiar to Evil Genius, but that was unintentional. The games mechanics are actually based on The Space Race.
Also, the forum ate my post, this is simply the short version
